Christopher Kane's Transparent Sophistication (Fashion Wire Daily)

London ? If next spring's fashion will launch any major new trend it is surely floral transparency, where see-through layers of fabric reveal Pop Art flower, petal and leaf motifs, and the movement's greatest protagonist will be Christopher Kane, who staged a brilliantly realized runway show in London on Monday, Sept. 19.

"It's really about childhood drawings, girls getting up to fun stuff, some of which they maybe shouldn't doing," joked Kane backstage, after his pastoral meets courtly brocade spring 2012 collection earned the biggest applause so far of London Fashion Week.

Staged in a beautiful new high-tech office complex, models strode out across a shiny metal plate catwalk, the runway cut like a gigantic horizontal funnel. Kane has been doing courtly glitz for a couple of seasons, but this collection took it to a new level, with its subtly executed layered coats, dresses and tops through which peaked an explosion of British garden flowers. Made in plastic, they were heat sealed onto inner toiles, allowing the clothes to breathe enough to wear in summer heat.

Yet for his cool opening Kane concentrated on brocades, a posh fabric that the designer manages to use with street credibility, cutting with diagonal slashes, pairing with tennis singlets and emblazoning with crystal clusters. The same crystals tweaked a great series of athletic sneakers and opened-toed sandals that will be the must-have footwear of next spring.

"After 10 days in New York, the girls all screamed with relief when I showed them the shoes, without any high heels," Kane explained.

The show also highlighted Kane's partnership with hipster Los Angeles jeans brand, J Brand, like great denim peg-legs with star encrusted snow crystal knees.

Pro-Russia party wins snap Latvian election (AP)

RIGA, Latvia ? A left-wing, pro-Russia party captured the most votes in Latvia's parliamentary elections, marking a milestone for the tiny Baltic nation where parties distrustful of Russia have dominated all national elections since independence 20 years ago.

With some 95 percent of ballots counted early Sunday, Harmony Center, a party catering to the country's ethnic Russian minority, had 29.2 percent of the vote.

Since 1991, when Latvia regained its independence after the breakup of the Soviet Union, no such party had either won an election or been included in a coalition government, a streak that Harmony hopes to change after Saturday's election. But other parties were already maneuvering to shut Harmony out of any coalition government.

About one-third of Latvia's 2.2 million people are minorities whose native language is Russian. Many of them are "non-citizens" who lack the right to vote. Latvia was occupied by the Soviet Union for a half-century after World War II.

An upstart party formed by former President Valdis Zatlers was in second place with 20.5 percent, while Unity, the senior partner in the current ruling center-right coalition, was third with 18.2 percent, a sharp decrease from the 31.2 percent it amassed one year ago in its election victory.

Leaders of these two parties ? which could together pull in about 42 seats in the 100-member Parliament ? have suggested they would begin coalition talks immediately in order to seize the initiative from Harmony in forming the next government.

Analysts believe the two parties are likely to leave Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis in his position, which would be a key signal to international lenders and investors who want assurances that Latvia will stick to its commitments to cut its budget deficit and keep on track to adopting the euro in 2014.

Still, to secure a parliamentary majority, the two parties will probably have to invite one of three parties expected to break the 5 percent barrier required to gain seats in Parliament.

Other than Harmony, there is the populist Greens and Farmers Union, which was gaining 12.2 percent of the vote, and the right-wing National Alliance, with 13.5 percent.

But since one of the two center-right parties has sworn not to cooperate with the populists, they face a stark choice for a third coalition partner: either the pro-Russia Harmony or the Russia-hating National Alliance.

"Forming a coalition, I think, will be more difficult than a year ago," former President Vaira Vike-Freiberga told public radio on Saturday. "Honestly speaking, I don't see that we are being offered something that could drastically change the situation."

The snap election takes place after the previous legislature, elected last October, was dissolved in a nationwide referendum in July. Some 94 percent of voters supported dissolution.

The referendum was held after Zatlers in May proposed dissolving the legislature for lawmakers' interference in a major probe into high-level corruption.

Zatlers, who was not re-elected by Parliament in June, went on to create his own party, whose chief aim is to dismantle the cozy relationship between business and government in Latvia.

The vote count shows that Zatlers might accomplish this goal. The Greens and Farmers Union, which is led by Zatlers' archenemy, Aivars Lembergs, is certain to see its position in Parliament weakened, and may even be excluded from the government for the first time in nine years.

The Slesers' Reform Party, headed by another influential politician-businessman, Ainars Slesers, had only 2.4 of the vote and is unlikely to make the 5 percent threshold.

Zatlers decided to dissolve Parliament in May after lawmakers granted Slesers immunity and barred investigators from searching his properties for evidence in the anti-corruption probe.

The decision on whom to nominate for prime minister rests with Zatlers' successor, President Andris Berzins.

Lawyers claim alleged IRA dissident was framed

(AP) ? The Lithuanian lawyer for an Irishman accused of trying to purchase and smuggle weaponry for the Real IRA told a court Friday that Michael Campbell was a victim of entrapment orchestrated by Britain's intelligence service.

Campbell, 39, was arrested in January 2008 after allegedly handing euro10,000 ($13,800) to an undercover Lithuanian agent posing as a weapons supplier.

The arrest was part of an international sting operation aimed at incapacitating the Real IRA, which is regarded as a terrorist organization opposing British rule in Northern Ireland. It has claimed responsibility for a number of attacks in Northern Ireland, including the murder of two British soldiers in March.

In a closing argument before the Vilnius Regional Court, Campbell's lawyer, Inga Botyriene, said that Campbell was provoked into buying the weapons and explosives by undercover agents of Britain's top intelligence service.

"He was never involved in arms deals and would never go to Lithuania for such an affair if he had not been provoked by secret agents. The entire affair was created and orchestrated by Britain's MI5, which worked together with Lithuania's intelligence service," Botyriene said.

Botyriene also said Campbell has never been a member of the Real IRA.

Prosecutors have asked for a 16-year prison sentence for Campbell, who has spent the last three-and-a-half years in a cell with three other inmates in the Lukiskes prison in Vilnius.

Botyriene said in a statement that an MI5 agent "spent months talking my client into this affair in Lithuania, saying he would organize the entire deal and suggested presenting himself as a member of the Real IRA to Lithuanian arm dealers to look more serious."

She blamed the agent for persuading Campbell "to invest his personal savings into this affair, who escorted him to Lithuania and introduced to Lithuanian agents, posing as arms dealers."

Campbell, who turned 39 on Thursday, did not speak in court Friday.

"Conditions (in jail) are really bad, but I got used to this. You see, I am kept here for almost four years," Campbell told reporters as he sat handcuffed and flanked by armed policemen.

Campbell allegedly first came to Lithuania in August 2007 to inspect some of the weaponry for which he later allegedly paid euro6,000.

Prosecutor Gedgaudas Norkunas told a previous court session that, according to witness testimony, Campbell had asked how much explosive material was needed to blast a bullet-proof government car and said he intended to use explosive devices against people.

Michael Campbell is the brother of Liam Campbell, who is also wanted by Lithuanian prosecutors. Liam, 47, is allegedly one of the founders of the Real IRA and also one of the four paramilitary group's leaders found liable by a civil court for a 1998 bombing in Omagh, Northern Ireland, that killed 29 people.

Botyriene insists that Michael Campbell's family background is irrelevant to the case and that he has never been charged with membership of an illegal organization.

"Just like any other ordinary Irishman he had books and magazines about this historic conflict between loyalists and Republicans. This is not illegal and does not prove he is a member of any illegal organization," she said.

The Real IRA broke with the Provisional IRA ? once the main armed group opposed to British rule in Northern Ireland ? in 1997 over the latter's support for a peace deal with London.

The next hearing in the Lithuanian trial is scheduled for Sept. 19, and a verdict is expected later this year.

See The Options a Police Foundations Program Offers

This article has been viewed 15 times.

Whether your interest lies in protecting a business as a security guard, your local community as a police officer or the nation as a customs officer, you can get your start with a Police Foundations program. These undertakings teach students everything they need to know to begin their journey to becoming involved in law enforcement. While positions do vary, Police Foundation programs teach students information that they will require ? no matter what route they take.

With courses based on real-life experiences and case studies that incorporate a fundamental perspective on life, the Centennial College Police Foundations program teaches students to: initiate, promote and facilitate partnerships to meet community policing and security needs; apply fundamental concepts of political science, law and legislative policy making and public administration to the provision of police services; assess crisis intervention strategies; and develop strategies to assist crime victims; document, prepare and assist in the presentation of court cases in compliance with criminal and provincial law, rules of evidence and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms; assess the use of police powers; and assess information-gathering skills used in basic investigative techniques.

If this in-depth knowledge sounds like it may benefit you, you can apply for the two-year Police Foundations program, which results in an Ontario College Diploma and prepares students to apply for positions with the Provincial Police Services, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Armed Forces and more. Due to the serious nature of the policing field, the application process is very thorough. First, applicants must possess at minimum an Ontario Secondary Diploma or equivalent or be 19 years of age or older. In addition, they must have compulsory English 12C or U credits or skills assessment or equivalent. English proficiency will also be considered and a program information session may be required. Applicants should also know that some program experiences might require a criminal reference check.

There is also a host of essential necessities that are typical in policing. Students should have no criminal record, must possess a valid driver?s license with a clean driving record and must have valid first aid and/or CPR certification. In addition, there are physical requirements such as: vision checks, standard normal hearing, physical fitness and readiness for the Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police (PREP) test. Lastly, applicants for police services careers in Ontario must be able to pass a security clearance, background investigation and credit and reference checks. For full details, please check out Police Foundations admissions page.

Centennial College?s Police Foundations program is housed within its School of Community and Health Studies and based at the Progress Campus. Students wear uniforms and are trained in an environment consistent with paramilitary training. This is done in order to help students develop discipline and deportment. One of the standout features of the program is its Police Preparation course, which give students a comprehensive approach in preparing for the application and testing process to become a police officer. Other courses include: Investigation and Evidentiary Procedures, Use of Force, Community and Experiential Policing, Youth in Conflict with the Law, Provincial Offenses, and many others.

If students wish to continue their education at university level upon graduation from Centennial College?s Police Foundations Program, the college has partnered with University of Guelph-Humber and Utica College ? University of Syracuse. This makes the transition to the university level easier.
