A suivre...
BALTIMORE (WJZ) ? The wait is over. Giant?s new Hampden location is now open for business. Monique Griego has more on what?s new since its move from the Rotunda.
New life in an old location.
?This is absolutely out of this world, over the top,? said customer Betty Pennington.
Customers couldn?t believe their eyes as they took in the sights of the new Giant grocery store on 41st Street in Hampden.
?I think it?s great. You have more room and everything is just laid out beautiful,? said customer Mary Chinquina.
The store opened this week for the first time, moving from its previous location just down the road at the Rotunda.
?The building was getting a little tired but it was nice to have a newer building,? said customer Neil McCabe.
?We were working at such a small space. We?ve expanded our space down here,? said General Manager Nick Hyson.
Hyson says some of the biggest changes include a new organic and gluten-free section, a high-end meat and butcher?s area and a sushi bar where you can get things made to order. This new Giant is also going high-tech, introducing Scan It. Scan It allows you to scan your items as you shop, so you know exactly how much you?re spending.
After that, you?re only a couple of beeps away from being on your way home. For customers, Scan It is really just icing on the cake to all this upgraded convenience.
?For some reason, everything looks better?bright and it?s nice and some of the things they have, they didn?t have in the other store,? Pennington said.
Giant replaced the old Fresh and Green at that location. The new store also added around 100 new jobs.

A contest is underway at data-crunching competition site Kaggle that challenges people to create "an automated scoring algorithm for student-written essays." This is just the latest chapter in a generations-long conflict over the nature of teaching, and to that end it's also just one of many inevitable steps along the line. Automated grading is already prevalent in simpler tasks like multiple-choice and math testing, but computers have yet to seriously put a dent in the most time-consuming of grading tasks: essays. Millions of students write dozens of essays every year, and teachers will often take home hundreds to read at a time. In addition to loading the teachers with frequently undocumented work hours, it's simply difficult to grade consistently and fairly. Are robo-readers the answer? Mark Shermis at the University of Akron thinks it's at least worth a shot.

A number of real estate marketing service companies are preparing for the return of the real estate market. And let?s face it, if they begin preparation now, they will be well positioned to take the market when it returns. ?Zillow, Realestatewebmasters, and Market Leader are 3 companies to look at as the battle of this market shapes up. ?And there are many smaller hosting and marketing companies looking to carve out a niche.
Real Estate Services is one market sector worth a look if you?re an investor looking for the next breakout opportunity.?There are millions of real estate agents in North America, Caribbean, and the UK and their sector is very competitive, yet most agents don?t have the skill or time to do marketing well. Those agents/brokers do their online marketing well stand to dominate their local markets.
3 high profile companies stand out as the lead horses in the race to dominate the real estate marketing service category. ?This category is about helping real estate companies gain visibility online, manage contacts, optimize email and ad campaigns, create leads, and build client loyalty. ?Given that all agents are turning to the web to generate sales leads, those companies that can provide these services are going to be highly valuated in the years ahead.
Zillow, Real Estate Webmasters, and Market Leader are the 3 top contenders to take the realtor service industry. ?Zillow had its high profile IPO launch last year and is now valuated at a billion dollars. ?It shows how a good idea (groupon, linkedin) can take off these days and make investors incredibly rich. Real estate webmasters is another successful company that might make such a move soon too. Market Leader?? recently purchased realestate.com and is purported to now be worth $84 Million. ?One interview with the company?s exec stated the company is losing money yet is still worth 100 to 200 million potentially. Realestate.com is a great property however they?ll need more to compete at the top level.
Zillow, (partnered with Yahoo), recently bought Diverse solutions (powerful idx solutions) to bolster its ability to create leads. The IPO will give Zillow the funds it needs to be a real estate marketing leader. First to market really, since not many companies have established themselves as a leader in real estate marketing services. Most are positioned as real estate agent web hosting companies. The market is fragmented due to the fact that mls associations are themselves fragmented. Zillow, and Yahoo?s Trulia are after the national market in the US, and they?re offering real estate agent advertising services.
Realestatewebmasters is perhaps the largest real estate web hosting company providing a complete content and client contact management system. Each customer is responsible for their own content development and marketing. Realestatewebmasters has some great website solutions (some customers might pay up to $30k setting up their custom site in the first year) however, because it is a system, it presents some limitations for lead conversion (standard programming). Realestatewebmasters doesn?t have agreements with all mls associations across North America.
What Zillow, Market Leader ?, Trulia, Realtor.ca, Realtor.com and other big players in this sector don?t offer to agents, is strategic, original content and dedicated marketing services. Their customers are basically provided with a generic hosting and visibility service. Agents are so desperate for leads however, that they are signing up. An advanced type of service that helps individual agents with content development services and top level SEO and Social Media strategies, will be more attractive. If an agent doesn?t get the leads and sales they need, they are quick to move onto another hosting provider. There?s lots of churn in the real estate hosting business.
Given that the large services can?t deliver the dedicated service and original content targeted for local city markets, there is a niche that can be exploited by dedicated content developers. ?Right now, IDX solutions are all the rage, but with the changes in Google?s search engine algorithm, new, original, engaging and sales converting content will be what everyone is after. The big companies won?t be creating that strategic content for agents.
So you've started a Hangout on Google+ with some pals. Now what? Are you just going to sit around and talk? Thanks to some new additions to the social network, you don't have to rely solely on your conversational skills anymore. The software company announced today the addition of a number of apps to the Facebook competitor, which should make your Hangout time all the more riveting. Now you and a few close friends can play poker and pop culture trivia, add mustaches and glasses to one another, collaboratively doodle and share presentations on the service. Google+ also announced today that it has taken its Hangouts API out of preview, letting developers share the fruit of their work with the rest of the site's fake facial hair-sporting community.
From 2 April 2012 MyHeritage will be offering the images and a growing searchable name index of the 1940 US Census free of charge, following the release of the census by the National Archives and Records Administration of the United States (NARA). The census will be available in 38 languages, searchable even on-the-go via mobile, with automatic matching to family trees.
To coincide with the release of the census MyHeritage will be launching its SuperSearch search engine. MyHeritage will automatically match the 1940 Census records as they are being added with the millions of family trees built by users on MyHeritage, notifying them about relevant results and eliminating the need for time-consuming and repeated manual searches. Users will be able to approve or dismiss any matches before they are added to their tree. This could be a particularly useful aid given that the 1940 Census records will be added gradually, so users won?t need to revisit the census and search again as new content is added.
The MyHeritage 1940 Census index will be independent from the 1940 Census Community Project being coordinated by Archives.com, FamilySearch and findmypast.com, and from the Ancestry.com index. MyHeritage aims to add value by publishing data from states not yet available elsewhere and will use a specialist historical transcription company to develop the index and make it searchable, pledging a 98% or higher degree of accuracy.
MyHeritage will also provide the 1940 US Census for free on its other family history sites at www.worldvitalrecords.com/1940census and www.familylink.com/1940census. In addition, users will be able to search the 1940 Census on-the-go with a new version of the MyHeritage mobile app for iPhone, iPad and Android, to be launched in the first week of April.
This is the most recent US census to be made publicly available (after a 72-year closure period) and is the largest and most comprehensive one ever to be published. It will provide a window into the lives of those who survived the Great Depression, and those who immigrated to America to flee from the Nazis in World War II. Census information includes detailed family information, such as names, ages, addresses, occupation, race, marital status, birthplace, citizenship, home ownership and the relationship of each person in the household.? Several new and interesting questions appear in the 1940 US Census for the first time identifying where the individual was living five years before (in 1935), information about wages and also educational attainment. Five percent of the population was asked supplementary questions including birthplace of parents, native language, usual occupation, and for women only ? whether they?d been married more than once, how old they were when they were first married and the number of children they gave birth to.
There are numerous causes why different people throughout the world suffer from different fitness issues.
One of the most traditional culprits behind bad health levels is the inactive lifestyles that people lead.
Moreover, the amount of pollution everywhere can also be looked at as one of the major causes for individuals having health related issues.
Still, irrespective of how many causes there are, all of them are united into one single cause which is that people do not take care of themselves.
The human body, like any other mechanical device, needs to be taken care of.
Without proper care, the human body will have problems ranging from simple temporary discomfort to continuing complex illnesses.
Moreover, the way an individual performs in life is almost always determined by how healthy he is.
It has been noted that individuals with poor fitness levels tend to perform at levels much lower than individuals who boast of perfect fitness levels.
Hence, if you want to achieve all your ambitions in life, then you need to achieve fitness first.
Consider the following primer for achieving fitness.
The Body Mass Index:
The Body Mass Index is very important for an individual looking to become healthy.
On the basis of the individual?s height, the Body Mass Index shows the proper weight.
The Body Mass Index is mainly utilized by people to find out whether they need to gain or shed weight.
Furthermore, by using the Body Mass Index values, you would be making your efforts extremely accurate in nature.
You can find out your Body Mass Index through different BMI calculators available on the web.
You just have to feed in your weight and height into these calculators and you will be told if your weight is appropriate or not.
You should be aware that it can even tell you if your weight is fine.
Your Basal Metabolic Rate is important:
While your Body Mass Index tells you how much weight you should have, the Basal Metabolic Rate will tell you how many calories you need in one day.
By finding out your Basal Metabolic Rate, you would be finding out how many calories you should take without your body losing out on its energy requirements.
Basically, you would learn to stop eating at the right time with your Basal Metabolic Rate.
You would be able to remain fit with the Basal Metabolic Rate, because overeating is seen as one of the causes for poor health levels.
Both the Basal Metabolic Rate and the Body Mass Index should be used together:
If you combine the values of the Basal Metabolic Rate and the Body Mass Index and avail them on personal training formulae, you would be able to find out how many calories you need to burn.
In other words, by availing these two values, you can actually find out how much exercise your body needs.
Moreover, some of these formulae would even tell you the kind of personal training you should focus on.
Tips related to your personal training regime:
There are certain things that you must keep in mind when devising your exercising regime for becoming healthy.
The foremost of these is the progression of intensity of your exercises.
It is possible that you will feel compelled to go all out in the beginning.
Even so, if you want long lasting results without the risks of serious injuries, you need to learn to increase the intensity of your workouts slowly.
You should also have the correct eating habits:
Eating right is as essential to you being healthy as are the Basal Metabolic Rate and Body Mass Index.
Eating habits include everything from the quality to the amount of food that you eat.
In other words, if you have a balanced meal with all the right nutrients, you are eating healthily.
For example, numerous individuals tend to rely upon fast foods and diets based entirely around processed food items.
Such a routine is not good for being healthy.
Fast foods and meals made of highly processed ingredients do not have the right ingredients and actually facilitate weight gain.
Apart from watching your weight, your beauty has also some direct effect to your health. WASHINGTON (AP) ? The heart of the Obama administration's health care overhaul hanging in the balance, the Supreme Court is turning to whether the rest of the law can survive if the crucial individual insurance requirement is struck down.
The justices also will spend part of Wednesday, the last of three days of arguments over the health law, considering a challenge by 26 states to the expansion of the Medicaid program for low-income Americans, an important feature toward the overall goal of extending health insurance to an additional 30 million people.
The first two days of fast-paced and extended arguments have shown that the conservative justices have serious questions about Congress' authority to require virtually every American to carry insurance or pay a penalty.
The outcome of the case will affect nearly all Americans and the ruling, expected in June, also could play a role in the presidential election campaign. Obama and congressional Democrats pushed for the law's passage two years ago, while Republicans, including all the GOP presidential candidates, are strongly opposed.
But the topic the justices take up Wednesday only comes into play if they first find that the insurance mandate violates the Constitution. If they do, then they will have to decide if the rest of the law stands or falls.
The states and the small business group opposing the law say the insurance requirement is central to the whole undertaking and should take the rest of the law down with it.
The administration argues that the only other provisions the court should kill in the event the mandate is stricken are insurance revisions that require insurers to cover people regardless of existing medical problems and limit how much they can charge in premiums based on a person's age or health.
The federal appeals court in Atlanta that struck down the insurance requirement said the rest of the law can remain in place, a position that will be argued by a private lawyer appointed by the justices, H. Bartow Farr III.
On Tuesday, the conservative justices sharply and repeatedly questioned the validity of the insurance mandate.
If the government can force people to buy health insurance, justices wanted to know, can it require people to buy burial insurance? Cellphones? Broccoli?
Audio for Tuesday's court argument can be found at: http://apne.ws/Hft6z3.
The court focused on whether the mandate for Americans to have insurance "is a step beyond what our cases allow," in the words of Justice Anthony Kennedy.
"Purchase insurance in this case, something else in the next case," Chief Justice John Roberts said.
But Kennedy, who is often the swing vote on cases that divide the justices along ideological lines, also said he recognized the magnitude of the nation's health care problems and seemed to suggest they would require a comprehensive solution.
And Roberts also spoke about the uniqueness of health care, which almost everyone uses at some point.
"Everybody is in this market, so that makes it very different than the market for cars or the other hypotheticals that you came up with, and all they're regulating is how you pay for it," Roberts said, paraphrasing the government's argument.
Kennedy and Roberts emerged as the apparent pivotal votes in the court's decision.
The law envisions that insurers will be able to accommodate older and sicker people without facing financial ruin because the insurance requirement will provide insurance companies with more premiums from healthy people to cover the increased costs of care.
"If the government can do this, what else can it not do?" Justice Antonin Scalia asked. He and Justice Samuel Alito appeared likely to join with Justice Clarence Thomas, the only justice to ask no questions, to vote to strike down the key provision of the overhaul. The four Democratic appointees seemed ready to vote to uphold it.
Kennedy at one point said that allowing the government mandate would "change the relationship" between the government and U.S. citizens.
"Do you not have a heavy burden of justification to show authorization under the Constitution" for the individual mandate? asked Kennedy.
At another point, however, he also acknowledged the complexity of resolving the issue of paying for America's health care needs.
"I think it is true that if most questions in life are matters of degree ... the young person who is uninsured is uniquely proximately very close to affecting the rates of insurance and the costs of providing medical care in a way that is not true in other industries. That's my concern in the case," Kennedy said.
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said she found the debate over health care similar to an earlier era's argument about the Social Security retirement system. How could Congress be able to compel younger workers to contribute to Social Security but be limited in its ability to address health care? she wondered.
"There's something very odd about that, that the government can take over the whole thing and we all say, Oh, yes, that's fine, but if the government wants to preserve private insurers, it can't do that," she said.

How quantum physics could make 'The Matrix' more efficientPublic release date: 29-Mar-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Researchers have discovered a new way in which computers based on quantum physics could beat the performance of classical computers. The work, by researchers based in Singapore and the UK, implies that a Matrix-like simulation of reality would require less memory on a quantum computer than on a classical computer. It also hints at a way to investigate whether a deeper theory lies beneath quantum theory. The finding is published 27 March in Nature Communications.
The finding emerges from fundamental consideration of how much information is needed to predict the future. Mile Gu, Elisabeth Rieper and Vlatko Vedral at the Centre for Quantum Technologies at the National Univesity of Singapore, with Karoline Wiesner from the University of Bristol, UK, considered the simulation of "stochastic" processes, where there are several possible outcomes to a given procedure, each occurring with a calculable probability. Many phenomena, from stock market movements to the diffusion of gases, can be modelled as stochastic processes.
The details of how to simulate such processes have long occupied researchers. The minimum amount of information required to simulate a given stochastic process is a significant topic of study in the field of complexity theory, where it is known in scientific literature as statistical complexity.
Researchers know how to calculate the amount of information transferred inherently in any stochastic process. Theoretically, this sets the lowest amount of information needed to simulate the process. In reality, however, classical simulations of stochastic processes require more storage than this.
Gu, Wiesner, Rieper and Vedral, who is also affiliated with the University of Oxford, UK, showed that quantum simulators need to store less information than the optimal classical simulators. That is because quantum simulations can encode information about the probabilities in a "superposition", where one quantum bit of information can represent more than one classical bit.
What surprised the researchers is that the quantum simulations are still not as efficient as they could be: they still have to store more information than the process would seem to need.
That suggests quantum theory might not yet be optimized. "What's fascinating to us is that there is still a gap. It makes you think, maybe here's a way of thinking about a theory beyond quantum physics," says Vedral.

International commission offers road map to sustainable agriculturePublic release date: 28-Mar-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]
Contact: Molly Jahn mjahn@cals.wisc.edu 608-216-6304 University of Wisconsin-Madison
MADISON An independent commission of scientific leaders from 13 countries today released a detailed set of recommendations to policymakers on how to achieve food security in the face of climate change.
In their report, the Commission on Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change proposes specific policy responses to the global challenge of feeding a world confronted by climate change, population growth, poverty, food price spikes and degraded ecosystems. The report highlights specific opportunities under the mandates of the Rio+20 Earth Summit, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Group of 20 (G20) nations.
"Food insecurity and climate change are already inhibiting human well-being and economic growth throughout the world and these problems are poised to accelerate," said Sir John Beddington, chair of the commission. "Decisive policy action is required if we are to preserve the planet's capacity to produce adequate food in the future."
The report was released today at the Planet Under Pressure conference where scientists from around the world are honing solutions for global sustainability challenges targeted to the Rio Summit to be held June 20-22 in Brazil.
The commission was created in 2011 and charged with identifying the best research-based approaches toward global food security in the face of climate change. The new report, available at http://bit.ly/ClimateFoodCommissionFinal, outlines seven recommendations they hope to see implemented concurrently by a constellation of governments, international institutions, investors, agricultural producers, consumers, food companies and researchers. They call for changes in policy, finance, agriculture, development aid, diet choices, and food waste as well as revitalized investment in the knowledge systems to support these changes.
"It's past time to realize that farms of every size all over the world are fundamental to providing for human nutritional demands and economic well-being, but they also face critical choices with significant implications for the way we manage the planet for long-term sufficiency," says U.S. Commissioner Molly Jahn, a professor at the University of WisconsinMadison.
Further, changes in agricultural practices have the potential to deliver benefits for both adaptation and mitigation of climate change. For example, in China, nearly 400 kilograms of chemical fertilizer are used on every hectare of farmland and, in Mexico, agriculture accounts for 77 percent of domestic water use, in part due to substantial subsidies for water and electricity used for irrigation.
Such practices offer both challenges and opportunities to refocus policies and budgets, say Jahn and the other commissioners, and they have urged the UNFCCC to establish a work program that addresses these issues together under the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice.
In addition to tackling agriculture, the commission's recommendations explicitly recognize the "demand side" of food insecurity, calling for policies and programs to support healthy and sustainable eating as well as those explicitly designed to empower vulnerable populations.
In particular, they underscore the need for improved data and decision support for land managers and policy makers. "The elements of the food system soil, water, climate, energy, people are intimately connected and it is critical that we understand how they work together as a system, and get that information into the hands of those who need it most," Jahn says.
The commission's report presents a stark picture of the challenges ahead and calls for decisive action on a global scale to ensure a "safe operating space" [link http://bit.ly/SafeSpaceClimateFood] for current and future generations.
"Many public and private sector leaders are already taking steps to overcome technical, social, financial and political barriers to a sustainable food system," says Bruce Campbell, director of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security, which convened the commission in February 2011. "The commission's work spells out who needs to do what to take these early efforts to the next level."
The commission is financially supported by the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) and the Global Donor Platform for Rural Development. The commission brings together senior natural and social scientists working in agriculture, climate, food and nutrition, economics, and natural resources from Australia, Brazil, Bangladesh, China, Ethiopia, France, Kenya, India, Mexico, South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States and Vietnam. Additional materials can be found at http://ccafs.cgiar.org/commission.
Commission Recommendations:
1. Integrate food security and sustainable agriculture into global and national policies
2. Significantly raise the level of global investment in sustainable agriculture and food systems in the next decade
3. Sustainably intensify agricultural production while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other negative environmental impacts of agriculture
4. Target populations and sectors that are most vulnerable to climate change and food insecurity
5. Reshape food access and consumption patterns to ensure basic nutritional needs are met and to foster healthy and sustainable eating habits worldwide
6. Reduce loss and waste in food systems, particularly from infrastructure, farming practices, processing, distribution and household habits
7. Create comprehensive, shared, integrated information systems that encompass human and ecological dimensions

For the skilled practitioner, online marketing can provide a good income. There are many different ways to market products on the Internet, but all of those ways have one thing in common, a time investment. You need to use the time you are given to the best of your ability. Continuing reading to learn ways to ensure your business success by making the most of your time.
You can send your customers a page that tells them all about a product before they buy it. This will help them feel more informed about the purchase they are thinking about. This shows that you would rather inform them about the product than make a sale, leaving them the option to buy or not.
A client mailing list is vital. Include a sign-up page on your website, or ask for your customers? email when they complete a purchase. Either way, you can use this information later to send out sales information, offer promotional materials or to ask for customer feedback.
Regular blogging can really infuse your internet marketing with success. A continuing blog also stands as testament to the enduring value of your products. Blogs will also increase your content. This will raise your visibility with search engines and increase visitor traffic.
It can be hard to know how to go about the content on your site. Analyze your primary interests and what really makes you tick before deciding which one to focus on. It is best to pick a niche that you know about, and that you enjoy. A clearly defined goal eases your ability to properly market your website.
Create a website that is laid out well with highly visible links. If your website is too difficult to navigate, you risk losing potential visitors to frustration.
Conducting business online can often seem very impersonal. This is an important strategy for smaller, independent businesses who want to create personal relationships with customers for retention purposes.
Internet marketing has some similarities to traditional business, but the fact that it?s the Internet does change things somewhat. For example, you may find that search engines are no longer paying attention to your title tags. If this happens, you will have to shift your focus to other attention seeking behaviors, such as video marketing.
Because of the internet, doing business can be much more anonymous. This tactic is especially successful for small or individually owned and operated businesses that rely on and can offer personal relationships in selling.
Online marketing does not need to exhaust all of your spare time. Be decisive and smart about how you spend your time, and prosperity will follow.

An animation by NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio tracks global ocean currents.
By Alan Boyle
Do science and art mix? They certainly do in a couple of computer-generated visualizations that show how Earth's oceans flow and how our universe grew up.
The "Perpetual Ocean" animation was created by NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio, and tracks ocean surface currents around the world from June 2005 through December 2007. It was created using a high-resolution computer model that translates whatever satellite and ground-based readings are available into a global, full-ocean depiction of ocean and sea-ice circulation. The model is called ECCO2, which stands for Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean, Phase II. ECCO2 is used for quantifying the role of the oceans in the global carbon cycle and for other scientific applications as well. Plus, it's just a darn cool video.
The funny thing is that the video was done almost a year ago. "This visualization was created as a last-minute entry for the SIGGRAPH 2011 computer animation festival; however, it was not accepted," the studio said in its database description. Despite that initial dose of rejection, "Perpetual Ocean" has gone on to become viral in the past week, probably because it has just been uploaded to NASA Goddard's popular Flickr site.
This year's deadline for SIGGRAPH 2012 submissions is April 9?? and I'm betting that, this time, NASA isn't waiting until the last minute.
Stanford University, meanwhile, has just put out a video that highlights visualizations created at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory's Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology, or KIPAC.
Dramatic 3-D videos, created from actual data at SLAC's Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology, show the origins of the universe.
Researchers at the Visualization Lab use supercomputers to produce computer simulations showing the birth of the first stars, the spread of the cosmic web, the blast of a supernova and other astrophysical wonders.
"Creating these animations is a real joy these days, because computers and software are so much more powerful today," Stanford physics professor Tom Abel, the head of KIPAC's computational physics department, said in a Stanford news release. "Not long ago, it took us weeks to produce a single animation. Now we can do one in an afternoon."
Take a look at KIPAC's image and photo gallery, and whenever you can, go full-screen with the video.
