US ambassador frustrated over Russian boy's death

(AP) ? The U.S. ambassador to Moscow on Friday called on Russian authorities and media to stop "sensational exploitations" of the death of an adopted boy in the United States.

The Jan. 21 death of 3-year-old Max Shatto, born Maxim Kuzmin, has fueled a fight over Russian adoptions in the U.S. as senior Russian officials accused the boy's adopted mother, Laura Shatto, of killing the boy.

The medical examiner's office in West Texas has not officially pronounced the cause of death and presented only early results, but the report of bruises on Max's body ? although their origin has not been established ? made some Russians jump to a conclusion.

Russian children rights ombudsman Pavel Astakhov last week branded the death as "killing" by Shatto's adoptive American mother. The State Duma's petition to the U.S. Congress on Friday mentioned that the death is "connected to the fact of violence" by the Shattos. The Russian theory that the boy was killed has topped the news on state-controlled media which have been using the case to justify country's move on Dec. 28 to ban all adoptions to the U.S. The ban sparked criticism abroad and a thousands-strong protest rally in Moscow.

In a response to Russian authorities and some state media which were nearly gloating over the death, U.S. Ambassador Michael McFaul said he was "troubled by how my people and my country are being portrayed by some in the Russian press."

"It is time for sensational exploitations of human tragedy to end and for professional work between our two countries to grow, on this issue and many others," he wrote in a blog post on Friday.

Russia's state-controlled Rossiya TV channel aired a live talk show Thursday evening featuring the biological mother of the boy, Yulia Kuzmina, who lost parental custody for Max and his half-brother Kirill Kuzmin over negligence and serious drinking problems.

In a tightly choreographed interview, Kuzmina insisted that Russian custody officials took advantage of her absence from her home town to seize her children. The program's host Mikhail Zelenin introduced Kuzmina as "mourning for Maxim and hoping to get Kirill back" while the experts commenting on the case were largely Kremlin loyalists including author Maria Arbatova who insisted that Kuzmina's children were "stolen" from their mother.

Kuzmina said she gave up drinking and found a job and pledged to fight to get back her other son Kirill, who was also adopted by the Shatto family.

Valentina Chernova from the children's welfare office in Kuzmina's home Pskov region said on the talk show that the woman was stripped of custody of her second children for drinking bouts during pregnancy and her negligence with her first-born.

The RIA Novosti and Interfax news agencies reported Friday that Kuzmina and her boyfriend, who were traveling Thursday night from Moscow to their home town, were taken off the train by police after a drunken brawl.

"It's up to court to decide how fit Kirill and Maxim Kuzmin's mother is for regaining parental custody," Astakhov said in his Twitter account Friday afternoon. "She deserves pity anyhow."

Max's adoptive mother, Laura Shatto, told authorities earlier this week that Max and his half-brother were playing outside the family's home near Odessa, Texas. Shatto said she came out and found the boy unconscious on the ground.

Shirley Standefer, chief investigator for the Ector County Medical Examiner's Office, said that there were signs of bruising on Max's lower abdominal area, but added that a full autopsy would be needed to determine what kind of bruising that was. Authorities also have not received a toxicology report that would have details on whether Max was being given any medication.

The Texas Child Protective Services spokesman said that they had received allegations of physical abuse and neglect, but had not determined whether those allegations were true.

Chick magnet? Nest diet has big impact on attractiveness of hihi birds

Feb. 12, 2013 ? Chicks that stock up on their five-a-day outshine their love rivals in later life, a new study shows.

Published February 12 by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and University of Cambridge, the study reveals that male hihi birds develop more colourful and attractive breeding feathers if they receive a nest diet rich in carotenoids -- natural pigments found mainly in fruit and vegetables.

Scientists looked at the effects of newborn nutrition on male plumage in the rare New Zealand hihi (Notiomystis concta) over the course of a year. The paper was published in Proceedings of The Royal Society B.

ZSL and University of Cambridge PhD student Leila Walker says: "We first hand-fed baby hihi birds either a carotenoid supplement -- natural pigments used to colour yellow, orange and red -- or a more complete dietary supplement. Then we looked at the effect this had on male breeding feather colour once those chicks had grown and moulted into their adult plumage."

All nestlings initially develop female-like plumage and fledge at around one month old. Youngsters then moult their body feathers at about four months old, during which time the males obtain their breeding features. Colourful plumage is an important factor in a bird's breeding success as it demonstrates the strong health of a bird to females.

ZSL Research Fellow Dr. John Ewen says: "We saw that nestlings receiving more carotenoids were brighter as adults. This was a combined result of the carotenoid-rich dietary supplement they received, and the carotenoids they obtained as part of a natural diet fed to them by their parents."

Research on hihi has highlighted how sensitive an individual's life is to experiences faced as a nestling. Scientists are now gaining an idea of the information content of different plumage ornaments used in breeding. The next steps will be to manipulate these signals in adult birds to further test the effects on mating success.

Almost all wild hihi populations require conservation support in terms of food supplementation. ZSL will continue to work on narrowing down on a diet that produces the most, and best quality, offspring to help rebuild high numbers of this most brightly coloured of New Zealand birds.

(AP) ? Mother Nature is clearly not a fashionista.

An impending blizzard forced Michael Kors to arrive at New York Fashion Week's Project Runway show on Friday in ? gasp ? Uggs.

"I came in looking like Pam Anderson," he joked backstage, where the offending boots had been traded for tasteful black leather.

Marc Jacobs postponed his Monday night show until Thursday, citing delivery problems, but for the most part Fashion Week went on with the show. IMG Fashion said organizers remained in contact with city officials including the Mayor's office about potential weather problems, but that they had planned for an extra layer of tenting for the venue and more heat at Lincoln Center along with crews to help with snow and ice.

Zac Posen said he would present his collection as usual on Sunday but he worried that out-of-town editors and retailers might not be able to make it. Other designers were considering plan B ? perhaps an internet stream ? in case crowds are snowed out.

Still, plenty of fashion fans wouldn't let a little snow get in the way. Baltimore college student Carmen Green arrived in a red cocktail dress and black high-heel booties.

"In this outfit, the blizzard did not deter me," she said. She did allow that she had only had to cross the street from her hotel and would change into combat boots for the train ride home.

The celebrity stylist Phillip Bloch even offered a blizzard pro tip.

"You either come in warm and comfortable clothes and boots or you come in neon ? or sequins would be a good one ? so they see you in the drift," he said.

Strategically Planning for Your Word-of-Mouth Success - SiteProNews

There are a lot of resolutions that come with the New Year. We make big plans and decide that we want to start new practices, fine-tune our business model, or perhaps start a new video channel on YouTube to improve visibility.

These aren?t really strategic. They might be good ideas, but they lack any weight or organization. Why are you going to do them? What needs to happen before? What happens after? When it comes to planning the future of your business, you have to be strategic. You have to plan out exactly what you want to happen and not just what you want to do.

Consider your resolutions. They?re usually simple ideas that are often broad-ranged. Planning takes these a step further and defines what they will do for your business model. So, rather than simply resolving to better your business, create a strategic model to follow this year and the next.

Effective Business Plan: Four Helpful Tips?

1. Write down your big marketing goals for the coming years

This should be done by putting one big project per card or piece of paper. Such projects might include starting a new blog, opening up new investment opportunities, or improving your networking opportunities through word-of-mouth marketing.

The concept behind this is to get a general idea of what you want to happen and what changes you want to make. This doesn?t mean all of these will prove viable or even necessary for the next year. As you define them, you?ll discover what you don?t need, and perhaps even come across something that you neglected to mention.

2. Define those goals

To define your big goals, you?ll need to organize smaller goals that are more descriptive. This time, focus on what it will take to make your goals reality. Are there necessary steps to making them happen? In this particular portion, you?ll discover what you need to do and perhaps even what you don?t need to worry about.

3. Focus on the act of prioritizing those goals

What needs to happen before something else? When does it need to happen by? Setting a timeframe for your goals is essential if you?re actually going to achieve them. This is perhaps the most prominent stumbling block of simply making a resolution or generating a goal. Without setting a time, you may end up putting it off or even forgetting about it completely.

Applying it to your agenda isn?t always as easy as simply writing down a date on a calendar. You?ll need to organize what needs to happen but, most importantly, schedule time to address that particular goal.

Set stages that lead up to the big goal. Use your smaller goals to set down a time frame that makes it possible for you to focus on them effectively. This will allow you to work steadily toward that big goal and ensure its success. Remember to allow for time that you won?t be available (personal/travel) to lessen your chances of needing to make last-minute changes which might set you back.

4. Don?t schedule in stone

When it comes to planning, strategy is an ongoing concept. New things happen; new opportunities arise, and unexpected outcomes occur. These can change our schedules very easily. We may even identify goals that are no longer applicable to our business model. So, instead of setting an agenda in stone, write it in pencil.

As you proceed through the year and pursue those goals, you can revisit them regularly and update them according to what?s relevant. You?ll need to stay tuned in and keep your schedule updated according to what needs to happen to ensure your success.

Having a goal is only the first step to turning it into success. You have to be willing to make sure you understand what it?s going to take and invest your time and effort into making it happen. So, focus on seeking the results, not just listing your brand?s goals. It?s the results that matter to your brand and will ultimately define your success. As long as you can define your goals and apply them to your agenda, you?ll be able to ensure your goals are all met by year-end.
