(AP) ? Don Trachte's cowlick has been tamed. Mary Hall is no longer a towhead. Butch Corbett is still thin, but not the beanpole he once was. And Tom Paquin's carrot top is thinner and grayer.

Twenty or so people who were children when they posed in the 1940s and '50s for their neighbor Norman Rockwell in the Vermont town of Arlington are reuniting there Saturday to share their memories of the great American artist who once lived in their midst.

Rockwell captured scenes of everyday life in his paintings and illustrations for covers of the Saturday Evening Post, for the Boy Scouts and for its publication Boys' Life, art now considered the very definition of Americana. He would pay his neighbors $5 a pop to appear in Hallmark cards, in calendars and on magazine covers that ended up gracing the coffee tables and littering the tree houses of millions of magazine readers young and old.

"The Saturday Evening Post came out weekly, and we couldn't wait to get it to see what was on the cover," said Hall, who posed for Rockwell four times. "You could always recognize who it was."

She appeared as a blond girl wrapped in a quilt and being carried out of a flood by a Boy Scout in an image that became a cover of Boys' Life, and as a teenager in a skirt, white blouse, bobby socks and loafers on a Post cover from 1948. It was called "Christmas Homecoming" and showed people welcoming home a young man who's carrying a suitcase full of dirty laundry.

An estimated 300 people from the area modeled for Rockwell during his 14 years in the southern Vermont town. Of the 70 or so still living, the oldest is 93 (he can't make it to the reunion). Many still live in and around Arlington.

Among the models planning to join in is Mary Whalen, who posed for the popular image of a rugged-looking school girl with braids and a black eye, waiting outside a principal's office.

The former models have gotten together before, but this weekend is special. They have been invited to view a new gallery of Rockwell prints and memorabilia that is taking the place of a recently closed Rockwell museum. The new owners are treating them to a turkey lunch in honor of Rockwell's famous painting of an excited family gathered for Thanksgiving dinner.

"I think it's important that the models keep the tradition of the image that Vermont, Arlington in particular, was important in Norman Rockwell's biography. That while he lived in Arlington he did his best work, probably ... and his local models were Arlington people," said James "Buddy" Edgerton, 82, who lived next door to Rockwell, his wife and three sons and modeled for him at least a dozen times.

Rockwell was a full-fledged member of the town, attending school basketball games and square dances, and had a great sense of humor, his neighbors recall. But as one of America's foremost artists, he could be as precise as any high-fashion photographer.

He would first have the models photographed and then would sketch a drawing. Sometimes the session in his studio took minutes, sometimes several hours. He always had a pipe in his mouth, and he joked around with the kids to make them comfortable.

"Rockwell had these images in his head, and he wanted you to smile or be wide-eyed in a certain way. You have to be a little actor, you see, and I probably was a little embarrassed," said Trachte, who was 5 or 6 when he posed for a painting of a little boy and girl in pajamas, holding hands and peering up at Santa Claus. Years later, Trachte and his brother found a Rockwell hidden in a wall at his parents' house; "Breaking Home Ties" sold at auction in 2006 for $15.4 million.

Rockwell knew just what he wanted, instructing the children to sit or stand in certain positions with particular expressions and to wear certain clothing, often providing Scout uniforms, or in one case, the velvet outfit that Hall wore for the cover of an edition of the book "Little Lord Fauntleroy."

"I find his detail just amazing," said Hall, whose father was a real estate agent who sold Rockwell his first and second home in town.

She noted that Rockwell managed to paint the small piece of tape around her leg from a sprained ankle that appeared above her bobby sock: "He didn't miss the details."

Edgerton ? who went on to write the memoir "The Unknown Rockwell: A Portrait of Two American Families," about a farm boy growing up next door to the Rockwells ? modeled for his neighbor mostly as a Scout, with his image published in four calendars.

The last time he modeled was in 1964, after Rockwell had moved about 65 miles away to Stockbridge, Mass., now home to the Norman Rockwell Museum. Edgerton appeared as a Scoutmaster with his son, then 9, in a painting called "Growth of a Leader," showing four profiles of a Scout progressing from a child to an adult with a graying sideburn ? much like Edgerton has today.

"He was a wonderful guy," Edgerton said. "He made you feel you were the most important person in the world when you were doing it."

Why Are Live Auctions So Popular?

It seems like pretty much everyone these days is jumping on top of the online auction bandwagon. Almost every day a brand new auction website is released and shoppers flock towards it in search of ever greater bargains.

But why are live auctions so popular? Well, this is one of the bigger questions surrounding online auctions, and not one which we could hope to answer completely in the limited time and space we have available to us. But allow us to at least have a go at covering some of the basics.

The term "live auction" is used to describe a lot on an auction website which is still open for new bids. In other words the auction is still live and the sale has not yet been finalised. Almost every auction website now conforms to a system whereby the auctioneers will also give you a handy little countdown clock, which will tell you exactly when this auction will cease to be live. When the time on that clock has counted down to 0, there will be no more bidding permitted on that lot and the online auction will close.

This countdown is one of the things that contribute towards making live auctions so popular. The fact that shoppers and would be bidders can go onto any auction website and see a useful clock which tells them how much longer they have if they wish to bid on the lot, is a common theme which consumers love to see. A live countdown like this is a great way to build up an excitement and a buzz around an online auction. Just ask any online shopper who uses an auction website, and they will all tell you the same thing. That the dying moments of a live auction are some of the most exciting moments in the online shopping experience.

Many online shoppers and bidders say that the excitement and anticipation which they experience in the closing seconds of an online auction, is the single biggest element which keeps them coming back. And of course, this build up of excitement is only made possible thanks to the presence of the countdown clock.

Sitting and watching the final seconds count down and wondering whether you are going to be lucky enough to win the lot, or whether a rival bidder will come in and pip you at the post, is what makes live auctions so exciting to be a part of.

Realistically however, if you came into this article wondering why live auctions are so popular among online shoppers, then the chances are you already know the answer to this. The fact is that if you have ever pondered this question, then you are likely as not, just as big an online bidder as the rest of us! Of course, there are many, many more things which contribute towards making live auctions on an auction website so popular. But what it all ultimately boils down to is the blend it provides between entertainment and shopping.

BidGrid are an innovative auction site where it's the lowest unique bid that wins. See how it works.

Builders put home buyers into credit boot camp

(Reuters) - In the post-housing crash world, Kelly and Jeff Clark are the kind of people who are not supposed to be able to buy a house.

For a down payment, they had exactly nothing. Their credit scores were sub-par. But this Christmas, the Clarks will move from their rundown rental into a brand new, four-bedroom home in an amenity-loaded development outside of Lakeland, Florida. All without paying a dime.

The Clarks were able to qualify for a mortgage because their builder, Southern Homes, spent the summer putting them through a financial boot camp. Bigger home builders such as D.R. Horton Inc , Lennar and PulteGroup Inc are also offering sophisticated financial advice to prospective home buyers who would not normally qualify for loans.

These fiscal rehabs are one reason many builders are boosting sales, even though mortgage lending is tight. Pulte said in July that its financial program could help its sales for some time. On Monday, Lennar Corp said revenue from home sales rose 33 percent last quarter from the same quarter a year earlier. Orders for homes rose 44 percent, helped by the 25 percent increase in membership in its Homebuyers Club since last year.

Providing financial therapy solves a huge problem for the builders: How to sell to first-time home buyers when so many younger consumers are saddled with student debt and bad credit.

The financial advisors go by names such as "mortgage advisors," "credit advocates" or "loan officers." They help prospective customers create budgets and slash spending. Both D.R. Horton and Lennar also help out with "credit repair," the practice of analyzing credit reports to determine the best strategies for raising scores as quickly as possible.

The buyers then get mortgages from the builders' own, in-house lending arms.

But consumer advocates say there is an obvious conflict when doling out financial advice. Instead of helping prospective customers maximize wealth, advocates say builders' advisors could be trying to suck as much money as possible out of buyers' pockets.

"What it does is create a captive consumer where the builder can charge a lot more," said Douglas Miller, executive director of Consumer Advocates in American Real Estate, a nonprofit.

Homebuilders are often helping buyers get government-backed loans that require no down payment, or a low down payment, so taxpayers could be on the hook if buyers can't repay their mortgages. Some consumer experts fear that, just five years after the biggest housing meltdown in generations, builders are up to their old tricks again.

"You have people applying for loans that there's no way they can pay, but it doesn't matter because the ability to repay isn't the basis of the loan. It's the ability to pass underwriting so the loan can be sold," says Washington, D.C.-based bankruptcy attorney, Brett Weiss.

Builders say they are putting people in homes they can afford and helping them achieve their dreams. Most loans that banks are underwriting now meet stringent government standards.

For buyers with enough cash and income, buying a home can lower monthly housing costs because mortgage rates are at record lows and rents are surging. Monthly mortgage costs are lower than rent in nearly every major U.S. metro area now, according to John Burns Real Estate Consulting.

CALL WHENEVER YOU NEED TO

Last year, executives at PulteGroup found that nearly 90 percent of younger buyers wanted to own a home. They loathed throwing away money on rent each month.

"The dream of American home ownership has not died at all," said Pulte Vice President of marketing Fred Ehle. "It was somewhat of a surprise to us."

But Gen X and Yers also had reservations about buying so soon after watching the housing market crash and burn. They also feared they would not qualify for a mortgage.

Just five years after the biggest housing meltdown in generations, that's led some consumer experts to fear that builders are up to their old tricks again.

The number of people aged 25-to-34 who bought homes in 2011 fell to 27 percent, the lowest share in the past decade, according to the National Association of Realtors. Rising student debt has played at least some role in that decline, analysts said. According to the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, about 50 percent of young people that started college in 2003 were paying more than 10 percent of their income on student debt.

In response, Pulte launched a mortgage advisor program, whose members are buying houses at twice the rate of prospective purchasers who do not participate.

The advisors hand-hold customers through the entire home process, from picking the floor plan to arranging the mortgage to taking as many calls as necessary to assuage fears.

"I could call whenever I needed to with whatever I needed," says program member Erin Shafer, a 23-year-old school teacher who is buying a new home, along with her fianc?, in Woodstock, Illinois.

The couple have student debt, but they had enough for a down payment due to a relative's recent death. Pulte is giving them $5,000 for closing costs, $3,000 worth for free appliances and a mortgage.

THE INCUBATOR

The Clarks thought they would remain renters forever. But early in the summer, a friend recommended that they meet with Janet Backman, a grandmotherly sales agent for Southern Homes.

During that first meeting, Backman pored over the Clarks' financials and decided to put them in what she calls her "Incubator."

That's the process Backman uses to convert the credit-challenged into home buyers within a matter of months. It drives her crazy that people in her area pay more to rent then to own.

The Clarks had no credit cards and paid for everything with cash. So as Backman talked with them that first day, she simultaneously signed them up for credit cards on the Capital One website.

Then she told the couple that, if they made $50 worth of purchases each month, but only paid the balance down to $25, their credit scores would likely rise immediately.

Within a month, Backman got the couple's scores up enough to qualify for the zero-down government-backed loan she secured for them through a partner lender.

Southern Home's sales agents have sold 162 homes so far this year, with nearly all getting similar advice and loan terms.

Says Backman: "Every time I hear about how hard it is to purchase a home, I'm thinking, what planet are they living on?"

Meanwhile, back at the ranch: Arroyo Food Co-Op tours Muir Ranch ...

The Arroyo Food Co-op invites you to join them on a tour of Muir Ranch, John Muir High School's three-acre farm and community supported agriculture (CSA) program.

?

Muirranch

Rows of sunflowers grow on Muir Ranch, Summer 2012.

A CSA is a way for consumers to buy local, seasonal produce directly from farmers. You sign up for a full or half box of fruits and vegetables, and pick it up at a designated location once a week. It's a great option for people who love the farmer's market but can't get there every week, and it's an excellent value. Because a CSA enables farmers to save on overhead costs, produce is generally less expensive than what you find at the farmers market.

?

Muir Ranch?s weekly boxes, or shares, contain produce and flowers grown by the kids, supplemented with fruits and vegetables from other local farmers.

Come hear about this incredible new local food experiment in Pasadena, tour the largest school garden in the San Gabriel Valley, and learn about the co-op?s new partnership with Muir Ranch!

Date:?Saturday, September 29th
Time:?10:30 AM
Location:?1905 Lincoln Ave, Pasadena, CA 91103. Please park in the student parking lot off Canada Street. Turn onto Canada Street off Lincoln Avenue, and follow it around the school to the lot entrance on the right.

Scottish bishop denounces abortion, gay-rights lobbies : News ...

CWN - September 24, 2012

A Scottish bishop has drawn public attention?and angry criticism?with his pointed criticism of groups lobbying for legal abortion and same-sex marriage.

"Why is the pro-choice lobby so desperate to hide the truth about abortion from the public?" asked Bishop Joseph Devine of Motherwell. He argued that the deliberate destruction of human life, and the effort to squelch public discussion of the killing, was reminiscent of the Nazi Holocaust. That comparison inflamed abortion supporters; a representative of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service called it ?breathtakingly offensive.?

Bishop Devine made the comment in reaction to a court?s decision dismissing a complaint against pro-life activists who had displayed pictures of aborted babies outside an abortion clinic. The court?s action was a victory for free speech, the bishop said.

Moving to another case involving free speech, Bishop Devine scolded Green Party leaders for ousting a prominent member because she opposed same-sex marriage. The Green Party, the bishop said, seems to be ?masquerading? as an environmentalist group when it shows more interest in promoting sexual license.

Mysteries Revealed About Credit Repair Companies - Finance Plaza

Actually, credit repair companies do a lot that you can do yourself. Credit repair companies would have you believe that they can work miracles with your credit report that has negative items on it. The truth is that if the negative information is accurate it will not be removed until seven years from the date of entry.?

Credit repair companies claim that they can remove bankruptcies, judgments, liens, and other negative credit information from your file. This simply cannot be done if the entries belong to you.?The scam companies will claim that a credit repair company can create a new identity for you is not possible and such action is illegal. There is no legal way to accomplish this. Many credit repair companies charge hundreds or thousands of dollars in fees giving you all kind of promises that you will never see come true.?

Credit Reporting Agencies are required under the Fair Credit Reporting Act to correct any information that is inaccurate or that cannot be verified. You can accomplish this by obtaining a copy of your credit reports and reviewing them for the accuracy of the entries. Each report comes with instructions on how to dispute items on your report. This is all the credit repair companies will do once you furnish them with a copy of your credit reports. The only people that a credit reporting agency is obligated to work with are either you or your attorney. ?

In fact, you are entitled by law to a free copy of your credit report once each year. So, they are easy to obtain and they are very easy to understand. If you have questions a non-profit credit counseling agency would be the first place to seek help. The Credit Repair Organizations Act is a Federal law that contains specific protections for you. These are some of the provisions of the law which state that a credit repair company cannot:?

?Make false claims about their services.??

?Charge you until they have completed the promised services.??

?Perform any services until they have your signature on a written contract and have?completed a three-day waiting period.??You can cancel the contract without paying any fees during the three day period.?

Companies that are not open with you about what they really can and cannot do should be avoided.?Many credit repair companies give advice which is illegal, and if a person follows this advice they are subject to Federal prosecution. It does happen so be very careful about what advice you follow.?

There are active web sites on legal credit repair. They offer sample letters to write to credit bureaus and letters asking for a reinvestigation if you feel the first letter did not get the action it should have. Send any documentation that supports your claim.

If a court judgment has been paid and it is not recorded as paid, then send a copy of the paid judgment to the credit bureaus If you believe that a credit account is reported on your report in error, then you should contact the credit issuer and ask them to clear it up. They almost always will cooperate because it is illegal for them to keep reporting inaccurate data.?When using a credit repair company, do your homework. ?There are a decent amount that are looking to scam you out of your money, but there are a few that are genuinely in business to help those whose credit has lost its way.

This has been a guest post by The Credit Geeks, helping thousands of customers improve their credit scores for years.

Brain: Protein that regulates key 'fate' decision in cortical progenitor cells identified

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? Researchers at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) have solved an important piece of one of neuroscience's outstanding puzzles: how progenitor cells in the developing mammalian brain reproduce themselves while also giving birth to neurons that will populate the emerging cerebral cortex, the seat of cognition and executive function in the mature brain.

CSHL Professor Linda Van Aelst, Ph.D., and colleagues set out to solve a particular mystery concerning radial glial cells, or RGCs, which are progenitors of pyramidal neurons, the most common type of excitatory nerve cell in the mature mammalian cortex.

In genetically manipulated mice, Van Aelst's team demonstrated that a protein called DOCK7 plays a central regulatory role in the process that determines how and when an RGC "decides" either to proliferate, i.e., make more progenitor cells like itself, or give rise to cells that will mature, or "differentiate," into pyramidal neurons. The findings are reported in the September 2012 issue of Nature Neuroscience.

DOCK7 was already known to be highly expressed in various parts of the developing rodent brain, including the hippocampus and cortex. It had been shown by Van Aelst and colleagues to control the formation of axons -- wiring that connects neurons.

Balancing proliferation and differentiation

In their newly published research, Van Aelst, along with Drs. Yu-Ting Yang and Chia-Lin Wang, a graduate student and postdoctoral fellow, respectively, in the Van Aelst lab, elucidate DOCK7's regulatory role in experiments in which the protein was alternately silenced and overexpressed.

When the protein was silenced in mouse embryos, neuronal differentiation was impeded; RGCs remained in their progenitor state. When DOCK7 was overexpressed, RGCs differentiated prematurely, resulting in more neurons and fewer RGCs.

These and related experiments revealed the mechanism through which DOCK7 expression affects the two essential but contrasting functions of RGCs. "Self-renewability of RGCs must be tightly balanced with differentiation for proper cortical development," says Van Aelst.

"The mechanism we discovered to be central in the determination of RGC fate is called interkinetic nuclear migration, or INM," she continues, "and you can see it in action in the movies made by Drs. Wang and Yang."

In INM, an RGC cell nucleus visibly travels over the course of the cell cycle "upward" and "downward" between opposing sides of the apical-most region of the neuroepithelium, called the ventricular zone or VZ. Nuclei move away from the apical surface during the G1 phase, undergo S phase at a basal location in the VZ, and return to the apical surface during G2 to divide at the apical location. [see diagram below]

It is DOCK7 that regulates this movement; in particular, the movement from the basal to apical location, the CSHL team has now demonstrated. On what appears to be the lower surface of the VZ, the apical surface, signals directing the RCG toward proliferation -- i.e., reproduction of other RGCs -- are dominant. On the upper or 'basal' side of the VZ, dominant signals coax the RGC to split into new intermediate progenitors or neurons.

Migration explained: DOCK7, TACC3 and centrosomes

"The cellular machinery that controls INM involves a protein complex of actin and myosin, called actomyosin, as well as microtubule-dependent systems," notes Dr. Wang. "We show how DOCK7 exerts its effects by antagonizing the microtubule growth-promoting function of a protein called TACC3." That protein, tellingly, is associated with the centrosome, the cellular organ that organizes microtubules, and regulates the growth of microtubules emanating from the centrosome, thereby coupling the centrosome and nucleus .

As Dr. Yang points out, DOCK7 acts by antagonizing the microtubule growth-promoting function of TACC3. Silencing of DOCK7 accelerates the movement of RGC nuclei from the basal to apical side of the VZ, resulting in extended apical residency of RGC nuclei and apical mitoses that lead to an increase in RGCs and a reduction in neurons. DOCK7 overexpression, on the other hand, leads to extended residence of RGC nuclei at basal locations and mitoses away from the apical surface, where the production of new neurons increases, at the expense of the proliferation of more progenitors.

Beyond elucidating an important mechanism of cortical development, the new research may shed light on pathologies seen in microcephaly, a condition marked by an abnormally small brain size, as well as neurodevelopmental disorders such as schizophrenia. "If DOCK7 expression is abnormal, you perturb normal neurogenesis," says Van Aelst. "In future work we hope to explore whether an imbalance in neurogenesis caused by DOCK7 aberrations is associated with a subsequent imbalance in cortical circuitry, and various known pathologies."

This work was supported by U.S. National Institutes of Health grant MH082808 and a New York STARR consortium grant. Other support came from U.S. National Institutes of Health research training grant T32 CA 148056-1.

Only children are significantly more likely to be overweight, European study finds

ScienceDaily (Sep. 17, 2012) ? Children who grow up without siblings have a more than 50 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese than children with siblings. This is the finding of a study of 12,700 children in eight European countries, including Sweden, published in Nutrition and Diabetes.

The University of Gothenburg, Sweden, was one of the participating universities in the study.

The study was conducted under the framework of the European research project Identification and prevention of Dietary and lifestyle-induced health EFfects In Children and infantS (IDEFICS), where researchers from various parts of Europe study diet, lifestyle and obesity and their health effects on children aged 2 to 9 years.

The study shows that only children have a more than 50 percent higher risk of obesity compared to their peers with siblings. The results were controlled for other influential factors, such as gender, birth weight and parental weight.

In the study, the children's measured BMI was linked to a parental questionnaire that included questions relating to the children's eating habits, television viewing habits and amount of outdoor play time.

"Our study shows that only children play outside less often, live in households with lower levels of education more often, and are more likely to have televisions in their bedrooms. But even when we take these factors into account, the correlation between singleton status and overweight is strong. Being an only child appears to be a risk factor for overweight independent of the factors we thought might explain the difference," says Monica Hunsberger, a researcher at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, who contributed to the study.

"The fact that only children are more susceptible to obesity may be due to differences in individual family environment and family structure that we were not able to measure in sufficient detail. To better understand the causality, a follow-up study of these families will start next year," says Lauren Lissner, a researcher at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg.

Over 22 million children in Europe are estimated to be overweight. The study shows that obesity among children in general is three times more common in southern countries such as Italy, Spain and Cyprus than in Sweden and other northern countries.

Marin Katusa & Doug Casey on Investing, Partnering w/ the Right ...

Dan,

Let?s suppose for the sake of argument that owning high quality companies, mining stocks in particular, is not a bad investment thesis, and that such an approach IS part of a reasonable overall wealth diversification strategy. Here?s my question: Despite the paper risks associated with owning paper shares (Wall Street corruption, stock settlement issues, etc), for those who want some exposure to the mining sector and ALSO want to hold some physical metals ? what percentage of an overall stocks to bullion allocation would you recommend? I?m at 70/30? 70% physical, 30% stocks.

Full disclosure: I own some PSLV, NGD, Great Panther Silver and a few others. I own NO Brazil Resources.

Soyuz Spacecraft Carrying Russian-US Crew Headed Back to Earth

A Soyuz space capsule carrying two Russian cosmonauts and an American astronaut cast off from the International Space Station and began the journey back to Earth Sunday (Sept. 16), wrapping up a four-month stay in orbit.

The?Soyuz TMA-04M spacecraft?carrying NASA astronaut Joe Acaba and Russian cosmonauts Gennady Padalka and Sergei Revin undocked from the station at 7:09 p.m. EDT (2309 GMT) as the two spacecraft flew high above Nairobi, Kenya. The trip back to Earth will take nearly four hours, with the Soyuz expected to land in the steppes of Kazakhstan at 10:53 p.m. EDT (0253 GMT Monday), though it will be just after sunrise at the landing site, NASA officials said.

The Soyuz's departure brings the space station's?Expedition 32?to a close. Padalka commanded the expedition, while Acaba and Revin served as flight engineers. Padalka handed the orbiting lab's reins over to NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, commander of the new Expedition 33 crew.

Expedition 33 will be a three-person operation for about a month. Williams, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko and Japanese spaceflyer Akihiko Hoshide have the station to themselves until mid-October, when the arrival of three new astronauts will bring the $100 billion orbiting complex back up to its full complement of six crewmates.

Acaba, Padalka and Revin launched toward the station on May 14 and arrived three days later. The astronauts' four-month stint marked the first long-term stay aboard the orbiting lab for both Acaba and Revin.

Padalka, however, had lived on the station for long durations during two previous missions and commanded the outpost's Expedition 32 crew. It was his fourth mission and third time in command of the space station.

Acaba, Padalka and Revin got to be part of history shortly after they first floated through the space station's hatch. They were there to welcome SpaceX's robotic Dragon capsule, which on May 25 became the?first private spacecraft ever to visit?the 430-ton orbiting complex.

Dragon's historic flight was a demonstration mission, to see if the capsule and SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket are ready to begin a series of 12 contracted supply runs to the station for NASA. Everything went well, and the first of these bona fide cargo missions is likely to blast off next month.

Baby One More Time," was reduced to tears after he was told he wouldn't carry on by the panel - including Spears who said his voice wasn't "up to the bar of the standards of 'The X Factor."On Thursday, however, Philip told Access Hollywood more than just seeing Spears again, there was another reason for his emotional backstage moment.

Russia's Putin tells critic his stunts were staged

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russian President Vladimir Putin has admitted that some of his most publicized stunts were staged.

Putin's media appearances ? riding a horse bare-chested, petting a polar bear and putting a tracking device on a Siberian tigress ? have endeared him to many Russians and provoked scorn among others. Last year, he was shown on Russian television with two ancient Greek jugs he allegedly found while scuba diving.

Putin confirmed to journalist Masha Gessen that "of course, (the jugs) were planted" and added that "swindles happen" when his subordinates organize his stunts, according to her story published in the Bolshoy Gorod magazine Thursday. He says he is angry over the set-ups.

Gessen, the author of a book critical of Putin, lost her editing job at a travel magazine after refusing to cover his flight with cranes on a hang-glider last week.

The Volokh Conspiracy ? Mathematics as Post-Modern (in a ...

A few days ago, over the breakfast table, my 9-year-old tells me:

Dad, I told a boy at school that any number to the power zero is one. He said that was idiotic.

Indeed, I had told Ben earlier that any (nonzero) number to the power zero is one. I think I had even tried to explain the reason to him, but I wasn?t surprised that the reason hadn?t stuck. So I felt I had to explain it again. And then yesterday, in the math puzzle thread, that boy-at-school?s more polite uncle (OK, I?m making up the family relationship) commented:

So I?m a lawyer and therefore math dumb, but I don?t understand how you raise a number to a square root power, or to any non-whole number power for that matter. So 2^2 is the same as 2 x 2. 2^3 is the same as 2 x 2 x 2. What is 2^1.4?

Here?s the thing: As Leopold Kronecker supposedly observed in the 19th century, God created the positive integers (and maybe zero), and all else is the work of man. Less metaphysically, when we talk about 2+3, or 2?3, or 6/2, or 3-2, we?re talking about things that obviously correspond to real world phenomena: combining piles of things, or splitting piles of things. When we exponentiate integers, we can also easily conceptualize this as corresponding to an obvious operation on integers: 3^4 is four threes multiplied together. We might throw in the rational numbers to this real-world math as well.

But, seriously, doesn?t it seem a bit idiotic to talk with a straight face about multiplying zero threes together? And even beyond that, negative five ? just what is that? Does anyone actually have negative five of anything? (I don?t mean owing five of something, which it turns out can be conveniently represented as having negative five, I mean actually having negative five of something.)

Here?s how I explained things to my 9-year-old: Let?s look at 1234.56. What does the 1 stand for? ?Thousands.? And 10 to the power three is ... ?One thousand.? How about the 2? ?Hundreds.? And 10 to the power two is ... ?One hundred!? (Always good to have some confidence-building questions there.) The 3? ?Tens.? And 10 the power one is ... ?Ten.?

Now at this point, we get to the 4, in the ones place and it sure looks very convenient just to go from 10^3 to 10^2 to 10^1 to 10^0 ? the thousands to hundreds to tens to ones. It?s useful to just say that 10^0 = 1. And then since the 5 after the decimal is tenths, you?d want to say that 10^-1 = 0.1, and then that 10^-2 = 0.01, and so on.

There?s another way of thinking about this, I told my son: We know that a^b x a^c = a^(b+c), for instance 2^2 x 2^3 = 2^5 (4 x 8 = 32); always good to see that with familiar, observable integers. If that?s so, then if c = 0, a^b x a^0 = a^(b+0), which means that a^0 = a^b/a^b = 1. And you can do the same with negative powers, too; adapting the formula I gave at the start of the paragraph to negative numbers, we see that it fits well to say that a^(-b) equals 1/a^b.

How about my commenter? Well, let?s say this: We know that (a^b)^c = a^(b*c). Thus, for instance, (2^2)^3 = 4^3 = 64 = 2^6 = 2^(2*3). We can even easily show that this is true, in a way that makes it intuitively clear for the sorts of numbers for which exponentiation is intuitively clear. If that?s so, then what?s 9^(1/2)? Well, (9^1/2)^2 = 9^(1/2*2) = 9, so (9^1/2) = square root of 9. Raising something to the power 1/2 is taking the square root. Raising it to the power 1/10 is taking the tenth root. (1024^0.1 = the tenth root of 1024 = 2.) Raising a number to the power 1.4 is multiplying it by the square of its fifth root (i.e., raising it to the power 1+2/5), though it?s not clear that conceptualizing it this way is that helpful.

So once we get past some basic operations involving the positive integers, zero, and the positive rational numbers, which correspond pretty directly to the real world, most other things ? negative numbers, raising something to the power 0, raising it to a negative power, raising it to a fractional power, and so on ? have properties that mathematicians have agreed on because they?re useful.

We make some mathematical statements because they are ?true? in the sense of corresponding to the observable world; the commutativity of addition of positive integers, which is to say (x + y = y + x). But other mathematical statements we make because that creates a more coherent way of dealing with certain sets of problems (though this coherence will often also help us deal with the observable world).

It?s not so much idiotic, I?d tell my son?s classmate, as postmodern. In fact, young man, it all depends on what ?is? is. (Well, maybe I wouldn?t tell him exactly that, because then I might have to explain the reference, and that might give me a bad reputation around school.)

If by ?a number to the power zero is one? you mean something like what we normally mean by ?two plus three is five,? which is to say ?there?s a real-world phenomenon that clearly corresponds to raising something to the power zero, and the result of that is one,? then that?s not really so. If you mean ?when you multiple zero copies of a number by itself, you get one,? then that?s not really so, either. But if you mean ?it really is very convenient to treat a number to the power zero as being one, and because of that pretty much all mathematicians ? and those students of theirs who paid attention ? define the operation in a way that the result is one,? then a number to the power zero indeed ?is? one.

Idiotic? Postmodern? Sensible? Maybe all three.

A perfect storm of propaganda on health insurance reform ...

A phony report from a phony consumer group, a misleading OpEd by a left-wing legislator and a dose of extreme demagoguery from a BDN columnist have created a well-orchestrated perfect storm of propaganda. But no one should be buying it.

This onslaught of misinformation is meant to discredit the recent health insurance reform passed by the Republican-led 125th Legislature. Although rate hikes under the new Public Law 90 for most Mainers are the smallest in years (many are even seeing reductions), this trio and their comrades are hellbent on sending a different message.

Their goal is to go back to the days of Dirigo Health, extreme health care and health insurance regulations and more Mainers on medical welfare.

The tempest-in-a-teapot started with a ?report? from the well-funded, pro-government-health-care lobbying group, ?Consumers for Affordable Healthcare.? Their ?report? ? although few could seriously call it that ? cherry-picked numbers, ignored positive new trends and is basically spin.

It failed to take into account the recent rate increases by Anthem and Harvard-Pilgrim that are the lowest ever, and this, according to the Bureau of Insurance, is because of PL 90, the law so maligned by ?Consumers? for Affordable Health Care.

The report described higher taxes but didn?t mention that they are only half of the infamous Dirigo Tax, which is now being phased out.

The report cites ?worsened product choices,? but the fact is that there are many new products available. Anthem has announced a new product that covers maternity care, combines out-of-pocket costs and is compatible with tax-advantaged health savings accounts. This product is a direct result of PL 90.

The report also failed to look at past rate increases. According to the Maine Bureau of Insurance, Maine?s average yearly rate of increase in the small-group market over the past 10 years has been around 19 percent. In the individual market, the average increase has been 13 percent.

This is a result of decades of Hail Mary liberal experiments, all of which were cheered on by Consumers for Affordable Health Care. Their brainstorms included community rating, which prevented insurance companies from charging young people less than old people. They instituted mandates that forced expensive policies for coverage many people simply didn?t want to pay for. They championed Dirigo Health, which failed to come close to any of its goals, ate up hundreds of millions in tax dollars and delayed real health insurance reform. Maine?s gigantic medical welfare program, MaineCare, has also had an adverse effect on health insurance rates.

There were more experiments, too numerous to mention, that ultimately forced prices up. We never saw a ?report? from ?Consumers? for Affordable Health Care when all of them failed, when our premiums suffered hyper-increases, when all insurance companies but two left Maine because of our onerous regulatory environment, and when our medical welfare population, percentagewise, became the largest in the country.

Rep. Adam Goode?s misleading and inaccurate OpEd (Sept. 4) is more of the same. While cherry-picking a few rate increases, it completely ignores the facts about the reforms of PL 90 and the positive results. This kind of hyperbole sells well to the Maine People?s Alliance crowd, but working Mainers see through this nonsense.

Columnist David Farmer?s piece (Sept. 5) is an over-the-top, partisan hit job. Its purpose is not to enlighten readers with facts but to destroy with demagoguery. The basis of his piece is the phony report. He exaggerates the results, denigrates Republicans and insinuates malevolence that is unfounded, unfair and insulting. It is meant to frighten. It?s all he has. His side has failed and failed again.

PL 90 is slowly providing relief to Maine?s petri-dish insurance market. The reforms in the new law, which are in complete compliance with ObamaCare, have been well-tested across the country and will bring Maine?s insurance market closer to normalcy.

Among other things, it changes community rating rules, allowing young people to benefit from their low risk. It provides a reinsurance pool so the least healthy can get coverage at reasonable rates. Moreover, it permits more businesses to band together and self-insure. It likewise allows out-of-state purchase of insurance for individuals in 2014.

Maine people have suffered for years as guinea pigs for all of the latest left-wing health care experiments. Correcting this injustice won?t happen overnight. While PL 90 has only been in effect for a few months and has not been fully implemented, good news is coming in already. You?d never know it, however, if you were in the path of this perfect storm of propaganda.

State Rep. Jonathan McKane, R-Newcastle, serves on the Insurance and Financial Services Committee. He is in his fourth term in the Legislature.
