HTC Desire X hands-on (video)

HTC Desire X handson

Earlier this year, HTC spent much of its mobile bombast on that other major European conference: MWC. But that doesn't mean the company showed up to Berlin empty handed. In a closed door session today, the company demoed a flagship of sorts: the Desire X. The 4-inch handset, just recently announced, may look familiar -- that's because it lifts distinctive elements of the premium One series for a decidedly upscale spin on an entry-level device. With an 800 x 480 Super LCD display, a dual-core Snapdragon S4 8255 running Sense 4.1 atop Ice Cream Sandwich and a 5-megapixel rear shooter enhanced by the outfit's ImageChip, this first-timer device is anything, but average. Curious to see how this top-shelf budget phone fared in our testing? Then follow along after the break for some initial impressions.

Chronic stress linked to high risk of stroke

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Chronic stress, prompted by major life stressors and type A personality traits, is linked to a high risk of stroke, finds research published online in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery and Psychiatry.

Chronic stress, manifested as physical and/or mental symptoms in response to stressors lasting longer than 6 months has been linked to a heightened risk of heart disease. But its impact on the risk of stroke has not been clear.

The research team base their findings on150 adults, with an average age of 54, who had been admitted to one stroke unit, and 300 randomly selected healthy people of a similar age who lived in the same neighbourhood.

Levels of chronic stress were assessed using the combined quantitative scores of four validated scales, looking at major life events; symptoms, such as anxiety and depression; general wellbeing; and behaviour patterns indicative of type A personality (ERCTA scale).

Type A behaviours include hostility, aggression, impatience and a quick temper. A score of 24 or higher on the ERCTA scale is considered to be indicative of a type A personality.

Participants were also assessed for known biological risk factors for stroke, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, any history of heart rhythm abnormalities, and daytime sleepiness.

And they were quizzed on their lifestyle, including their caffeine, alcohol and energy drink intake, as well as whether they smoked, had a partner, and a job.

The results showed that several factors were independently associated with a heightened risk of stroke.

Compared with the healthy comparison group, the risk of a stroke was almost four times higher among those who had experienced a major life event in the previous year.

A high score on the ERCTA scale more than doubled stroke risk, as did a current or previous history of smoking, and intake of two or more energy drinks a day.

And those with heart rhythm disturbances were more than three times as likely to have a stroke while those with a high daytime sleepiness score almost tripled their risk. And being a man boosted the risk nine-fold.

But when all the factors were assessed together, the risk of a stroke was associated with a stressful life and type A behaviours. And this held true, irrespective of other risk factors, including gender and an unhealthy lifestyle.

Who is to blame for UFC 151 cancellation?

Plenty of anger bubbled up after UFC 151 was canceled. From UFC president Dana White to fans who posted on Cagewriter's Facebook page, people are angry there won't be fights in Las Vegas next weekend. Anger quickly turns into a search for blame. Who do you blame for UFC 151's demise?

Jon Jones: When an injury happens, fighters often have to make sacrifices to still be able to fight. Ask Rich Franklin about the many times he has stepped up when the UFC needed him to, and how he's been rewarded. Jones didn't do that, and missed out on an opportunity to win a ton of fans. He made a business decision, but now will have to face the business consequences for how fans react when fights at UFC 152.

The UFC: In planning a top-heavy card with UFC 151, they were playing with fire. Main event fighters are injured all the time. Even Jones has had to postpone fights for an injury. Putting a holiday weekend pay-per-view on the backs of two fighters was begging for a problem, as was hoping for a late replacement after a very busy summer of MMA.

Greg Jackson: UFC president Dana White threw some blame towards Jackson, Jones' coach.

"Jones's trainer, Greg Jackson, told Jon that taking the fight with Chael would be the biggest mistake of his life. That's what he told Jon Jones. Let me tell you, this guy (Greg Jackson) is a sport killer," White said on a media conference call.

"When you are a champion, much less one of the guys who is supposed to be one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, you are supposed to step up. Jon Jones is a guy a lot of fans don't like, and I don't think this is going to make him any more popular. Lorenzo Fertitta (UFC chairman and CEO) and I are disgusted with Jon Jones and Greg Jackson."

Dan Henderson's knee: And here we come to the real culprit behind the cancellation of UFC 151. How dare you become injured when training in a brutal, dangerous sport, knee?

Canada: Always blame Canada.

Does any one person or group deserve the blame for UFC 151 being canceled? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

A little music training goes a long way

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

A little music training in childhood goes a long way in improving how the brain functions in adulthood when it comes to listening and the complex processing of sound, according to a new Northwestern University study.

The impact of music on the brain has been a hot topic in science in the past decade. Now Northwestern researchers for the first time have directly examined what happens after children stop playing a musical instrument after only a few years -- a common childhood experience.

Compared to peers with no musical training, adults with one to five years of musical training as children had enhanced brain responses to complex sounds, making them more effective at pulling out the fundamental frequency of the sound signal.

The fundamental frequency, which is the lowest frequency in sound, is crucial for speech and music perception, allowing recognition of sounds in complex and noisy auditory environments.

"Thus, musical training as children makes better listeners later in life," said Nina Kraus, the Hugh Knowles Professor of Neurobiology, Physiology and Communication Sciences at Northwestern.

"Based on what we already know about the ways that music helps shape the brain," she said, "the study suggests that short-term music lessons may enhance lifelong listening and learning."

"A Little Goes a Long Way: How the Adult Brain is Shaped by Musical Training in Childhood" will be published in the Aug. 22 edition of the Journal of Neuroscience.

"We help address a question on every parent's mind: 'Will my child benefit if she plays music for a short while but then quits training?'" Kraus said.

Many children engage in group or private music instruction, yet, few continue with formal music classes beyond middle or high school.

But most neuroscientific research has focused on the rare and exceptional music student who has continued an active music practice during college or on the rarer case of a professional musician who has spent a lifetime immersed in music.

"Our research captures a much larger section of the population with implications for educational policy makers and the development of auditory training programs that can generate long-lasting positive outcomes," Kraus said.

For the study, young adults with varying amounts of past musical training were tested by measuring electrical signals from the auditory brainstem in response to eight complex sounds ranging in pitch. Because the brain signal is a faithful representation of the sound signal, researchers are able to observe how key elements of the sound are captured by the nervous system and how these elements might be weakened or strengthened in different people with different experiences and abilities.

Forty-five adults were grouped into three age- and IQ- matched groups based on histories of musical instruction. One group had no musical instruction; another had 1 to 5 years; and the other had to 6 to 11 years. Both musically trained groups began instrumental practice around age 9 years, a common age for in-school musical instruction to begin. As predicted, musical training during childhood led to more robust neural processing of sounds later in life.

Prior research on highly trained musicians and early bilinguals revealed that enhanced brainstem responses to sound are associated with heightened auditory perception, executive function and auditory communication skills.

"From this earlier research, we infer that a few years of music lessons also confer advantages in how one perceives and attends to sounds in everyday communication situations, such as noisy restaurants or rides on the "L," Kraus said.

A running theme in Kraus' research is "your past shapes your present."

"The way you hear sound today is dictated by the experiences with sound you've had up until today," she said. "This new finding is a clear embodiment of this theme."

In past research, Kraus and her team examined how bilingual upbringing and long-term music lessons affect the auditory brain and how the brain changes after a few weeks of intensive auditory experiences, such as computerized training. Their current research is investigating the impact of socioeconomic hardships on adolescent brain function.

"We hope to use this new finding, in combination with past discoveries, to understand the type of education and remediation strategies, such as music classes and auditory-based training that might be most effective in combating the negative impact of poverty," she said.

By understanding the brain's capacity to change and then maintain these changes, the research can inform the development of effective and long-lasting auditory-based educational and rehabilitative programs.

In looking at the events and exchanges that led to the break up, chances are both of you had conflicting communication styles that didn?t work. This led to hurtful words and provided little progress in what you were trying to express or resolve.

Becoming aware of how you communicate can help in expressing how you feel, and how you help others feel loved and appreciated.

What are the four types of communication you need to know about? And just as important ? which style is the right style?

Passive Communication

The passive communicator has difficulty expressing their thoughts and feelings. They tend to hold concerns in and hope things will get better. Since it is difficult for them to express their needs, they prefer their loved ones to read their mind and understand what is wrong. This person can often be perceived as shy. They are hesitant to express their feelings since it risks the other person getting upset with them and potentially starting a fight.

Aggressive Communication

Japan trade deficit shows world economy 'serious'

Sagging export markets in Europe and Asia left Japan with a much worse-than-expected trade deficit, figures showed Wednesday, ringing alarm bells over the parlous state of the global economy.

The rumbling debt crisis in Europe and slowing demand in Asia -- until recently a bright spot on the economic horizon -- are taking their toll, with analysts sounding warnings that things are getting "even more serious".

Japan's trade with the rest of the world in July showed a shortfall of 517.4 billion yen ($6.5 billion), the largest ever deficit for the month and nearly double the 275 billion yen deficit that had been forecast.

The figure also marked a drastic reversal of June's numbers, when Japan recorded a small but respectable surplus of 60.3 billion yen.

The data showed "the recent trend in which weakness in China and Europe has been putting major downward pressure on Japan's trade is getting even more serious", said Takahiro Sekido, Japan strategist of Global Markets Research at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ.

The latest figures "indicate that they are not just risks anymore but a reality", he told Dow Jones Newswires, adding the result may encourage the Bank of Japan to take "preemptive" action to shore up the economy, where exports play a vital role.

He said he expected the next monetary easing moves by the Japanese central bank to come in late October, when it is slated to release a semi-annual outlook report.

Overall exports slid 8.1 percent to 5.31 trillion yen with shipments of electronic parts falling, even as automobile exports rose.

By region, exports to the European Union plunged 25.1 percent year-on-year amid the debt crisis. Imports from the EU rose 10.6 percent, leaving Japan with a deficit of 95.2 billion yen with the embattled economic zone.

Exports to China fell 11.9 percent against a 3.3 percent rise in imports, making Japan's deficit with its biggest trading partner nearly double that in June at 250.1 billion yen.

Japan's combined exports to other leading economies in Asia -- South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore -- also fell a sharp 14.2 percent.

US-bound shipments rose 4.7 percent, slower than the 15.1 percent rise in June, while imports turned up 7.6 percent.

Mizuho Securities Research and Consulting senior economist Norio Miyagawa said "exports to the United States were not as strong as we had expected while those to Europe and Asia remain subdued".

Japan's trade would continue to show a deficit "as we'll see more increases in imports due to higher energy prices" he said, but added a pick-up seen in the US economy provided some hope.

Japan's overall imports rose 2.1 percent to 5.83 trillion yen on the high cost of liquefied natural gas.

Japan has struggled to meet its energy needs and turned to pricey fossil fuel alternatives as nuclear reactors have gone offline amid public distrust of the technology following the tsunami-sparked crisis at Fukushima in March 2011.

Dinosaur prints found at NASA center

At NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, some of the most brilliant minds in the world work to build the spacecraft that humans use to explore their universe. But where space scientists now roam, dinosaurs used to call home, according to dino-hunter Ray Stanford.

Stanford has discovered the footprint of a lumbering, spiny dinosaur called a nodosaur in NASA's own backyard on the Goddard Space Flight Center campus. NASA officials aren't disclosing the precise location of the print, fearing that someone might damage or try to remove the fossilized track.

The dinner-plate-sized footprint bears the mark of four dino toes. It belongs to a nodosaur, a tank-like, armored beast studded with bony protuberances that roamed the area about 110 million years ago during the Cretaceous period, which lasted from about 125 million to 65 million years ago. Nodosaurs were plant-eaters, and this one appeared to be moving quickly across the Cretaceous mud, as its heel did not sink deeply into the ground. [ See Images of the Ancient Dino-Print ]

Stanford, an amateur paleontologist who has had several papers published, confirmed his find with Johns Hopkins University dinosaur expert David Weishampel. On Aug. 17, Stanford shared the location of the find with Goddard officials and with Washington Post reporter Brian Vastag, who made the discovery public the same day.

Stanford also found several smaller dinosaur footprints in the area, likely from meat-eating theropods. He called the location "poetic."

"Space scientists may walk along here, and they're walking exactly where this big, bungling heavy-armored dinosaur walked, maybe 110 to 112-million years ago," Stanford told Goddard officials.

Maryland is no spring chicken when it comes to dinosaur fossils; in fact, the corridor between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Md., is known as "Dinosaur Alley," because so many of the beasts' fossils were discovered during iron mining in the 18th and 19th centuries, according to Weishampel.

"Today, Maryland remains the only source of Early Cretaceous dinosaur fossils on the East Coast," he wrote in a 1996 article for Johns Hopkins University magazine.

Pakistan Christian girl held, accused of blasphemy

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Pakistani authorities have arrested a young Christian girl after hundreds of furious neighbors gathered outside her house and accused her of violating the country's strict blasphemy laws by burning pages of the Muslim holy book, police and neighbors said Monday. The girl's age was not immediately clear, with reports ranging from 11 to 16, and some have raised the possibility she might be mentally handicapped.

Under Pakistan's blasphemy laws, anyone found guilty of insulting Islam's Prophet Muhammad or defiling the holy book, or Quran, can face life in prison or even execution. The laws have been an ongoing source of controversy even though those convicted are rarely executed. Rising extremism in the country often means religious minorities live in fear of persecution and accusations of blasphemy.

The latest case exploded on Thursday, when neighbors angry over rumors a Christian girl had allegedly burned a Quran gathered outside her house in a poor outlying district of the capital, Islamabad, said police officer Zabi Ullah. He said the police took the girl to the police station and she is being held for 14 days while authorities investigate the allegations. Several police officers suggested she may also be being held for her own protection.

"About 500 to 600 people had gathered outside her house in Islamabad and they were very emotional, angry and they might have harmed her if we had not quickly reacted," he said. The crowd demanded that the police take action against the girl. Another police official, Qasim Niazi, said when the girl was brought to the police station, she had a shopping bag that contained various religious and Arabic-language papers that had been partly burned, but there was no Quran among the papers.

Muslim residents of the neighborhood insisted they treat their Christian neighbors with respect, and that while some Christians had left out of fear immediately following the incident on Thursday, most had returned. Christians in the neighborhood were reluctant to talk, but many said their landlords had told them they had to leave their rented houses by the end of the month.

Much of the case has been clouded by confusion. And in a sign of how easily rumor can trump truth in Pakistan, almost everyone in her neighborhood insisted she had burned the Quran, even though police said they had found no evidence of it. Some residents claimed they actually saw burnt pages of Quran ? either at the local mosque or at the girl's house ? and their statements were picked up in the Pakistani media.

One police officer familiar with the girl's case said the matter would likely be dropped once the investigation is completed and the atmosphere is defused, saying there was "nothing much to the case." He did not want to be identified due to the sensitivity of the case.

Some human rights officials and media reports said the girl was mentally handicapped.

A spokesperson for Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, Farhatullah Babar, said the president has taken "serious note" of reports of the girl's arrest and has asked the Interior Ministry to look into the case.

The arrest of the girl and outrage among the local community demonstrates the deep emotion that suspected blasphemy cases can evoke in this conservative Muslim country. But many critics say the blasphemy laws are also sometimes used to settle scores and exact revenge.

Those convicted of blasphemy can spend years in prison and often face mob justice by extremists when they finally do get out.

Angry mobs have been known to sometimes take the law into their own hands and beat or kill people accused of violating the blasphemy laws. In July, thousands of people dragged a man accused of desecrating the Quran from a police station in the central city of Bahawalpur, beat him to death and then set his body on fire.

Attempts to revoke or alter the blasphemy laws have been met with violent opposition. Last year, two prominent political figures who spoke out against the laws were killed in attacks that further raised concerns about the rise of religious extremism in the country.

In the neighborhood where the incident happened, all the residents were convinced the girl had desecrated the holy book. One possible explanation for the confusion is that few people in Pakistan actually speak or read Arabic so anything with Arabic script on it is often believed to be from the Quran, sometimes the only Arabic-language book people have ever seen.

Some Muslims gathered Monday at the local mosque less than a hundred yards (meters) from the grey concrete house where neighbors said the Christian girl and her family live. They said the Christians in this mixed neighborhood needed to respect the Islamic traditions and culture.

"Their priest should tell them that they should respect the call for prayer. They should respect the mosque and the Quran. This is what should have happened. We are standing in the house of God. This incident has happened and it is true. It was not good," said one Muslim man, Haji Pervez.

Though no one knew the girl's exact age, the possibility that she could be as young as 11 did not faze the angry neighbors.

"Even a 3-year-old, 4-year-old child knows: "This is Muslim. This is Christian. This is our religion," said Mohammed Ilyas, a shopkeeper in the neighborhood.

Faux populism, and a renewed appeal to the 'hardworking taxpayer'

Paul Ryan has been making a lot of speeches lately extolling the value of small government and lower taxes. But small government under the influence of big money would still be dominated by the interests of high rollers such as Sheldon Anderson and the Koch brothers.

By Robert Reich,?Guest blogger / August 19, 2012

This July 2012 file photo shows American businessman Sheldon Adelson, is shown in Jerusalem, Israel. Mitt Romney's choice for vice president, Paul Ryan, has connections to Sheldon Andersen, billionaire conservative fundraiser. Some find such connections make Ryan's populist rhetoric suspect at best, and possibly hypocritical.

?It?s the people who are politically connected, it?s the people who have access to Washington that get the breaks,? he told an enthusiastic crowd of over 2,000 at a high school gym in Virginia.

?Well, no more. We don?t want to pick winners and losers in Washington? . Hardworking taxpayers should be treated fairly and it should be based on whether they?re good, whether they work hard and not who they know in Washington. That?s entrepreneurialism. That?s free enterprise.?

Sounds good, but earlier this week ? three days after being picked as Romney?s running-mate ? Ryan went to Las Vegas to pay homage to Sheldon Adelson, the casino billionaire who is the poster boy for using money to become ?politically connected? in Washington, and getting the ?breaks? that come with it. Adelson has promised to donate up to $100 million to make sure Romney and Ryan are in the White House next year.

Much of Adelson?s fortune comes from his casino in Macau, in China, via his money-greased access to Washington.

When China?s pitch for the 2008 Olympics was endangered by a House resolution opposing the bid because of China?s ?abominable human rights record,? Adelson phoned Tom DeLay, then House majority whip and recipient of Adelson?s political generosity ? urging him to block the resolution, which DeLay promptly did. The next day, according to the New York Times, a Chinese vice premier promised Mr. Adelson an endless line of gamblers to the Macau casino.

The money Adelson has committed to putting Romney and Ryan into the White House is a business investment. Adelson has a lot riding on the 2012 election.

Last year, his Las Vegas Sands Corporation came under investigation by the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission for possible violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act ? bribing Chinese officials to help expand its casino in Macau.

The U.S. attorney?s office in Los Angeles, meanwhile, is investigating whether the Sands Corporation violated federal money-laundering laws by accepting more than $100 million from high-rolling gamblers accused of drug trafficking and embezzlement, rather than reporting the suspicious funds to the government.

Ryan has also been a major recipient of contributions from billionaire energy moguls Charles and David Koch. Koch Industries PAC has donated more than $100,000 to Ryan?s campaigns and his leadership PAC ? more than any other corporate PAC, according to a NY Times analysis of campaign records.

You see, Koch industries spans a variety of oil and gas investments ? whose value would be compromised if Congress and the White House got serious about climate change.

Small wonder Paul Ryan has emerged as one of Congress?s most outspoken skeptics of climate change. He has also repeatedly voted against energy efficiency standards, including a House vote to prohibit the EPA from regulating greenhouse gases.

Several months ago, when I debated Paul Ryan on ABC-TV?s ?This Week,? he said we need to shrink the size of government because big corporations and wealthy individuals otherwise use government to their advantage.

?If the power and money are going to be here in Washington, that?s where the influence is going to go ? that?s where the powerful are going to go to influence it,? he said.

It?s an odd argument coming from Ryan because his proposed budget doesn?t shrink government by cutting benefits and payments to big business and the rich. He increases military payments to defense contractors, for example, slashes Wall Street regulations, and gives giant tax benefits to the rich.

His budget shrinks government mainly by cutting benefits and payments to the poor and lower-income Americans. Over?60 percent?of his spending cuts target programs for Americans in the bottom third of the income ladder.

Ryan is correct when he says ?it?s the people who are politically connected, it?s the people who have access to Washington that get the breaks.?

But his faux populism obscures the main point. A much smaller government still dominated by money would continue to do the bidding of billionaires like casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, energy moguls like the Koch bothers, military contractors, and other high rollers now actively trying to put Ryan and Romney into the White House.

It just wouldn?t do anything for the rest of us.

On Julia Child's 100th Birthday, A Tour of Her Many Homes ...

Today is the would-be 100th birthday of the late, great TV chef Julia Child and we're marking the occasion by rounding up five of her homes, some of them legendary. Long before she was typing for the OSS, before she attended culinary school in Paris, before she nearly single-handedly introduced French cooking to the American public, and way, way before she was autotuned, culinary wonder woman Child, then Julia McWilliams, spent her childhood in this glorious villa of a house at 625 Magnolia Avenue in Pasadena, Calif. She spent 18 years growing up in the suburbs of Los Angeles before heading off to the East Coast to attend Smith College.

julia-dc.jpegPhoto: CoS

? Child joined the Office of Strategic Services, a precursor to the CIA, during World War II and was posted to Sri Lanka, where she met her future husband, Paul Child. The couple moved together to Washington, D.C., where they took up residence in this now rather run-down Georgetown home. Built by an African-American carpenter for his family sometime before 1870, 2706 Olive Avenue was only inhabited by the Childs for a brief period before they moved away Before long, they were reassigned to Paris, where Julia took up French cooking in earnest.

julias-house.jpegPhoto: Ann Mah

? In Paris, Julia and Paul settled down in a duplex on the top two floors of 81 rue de l'Universit?. It was from this home base that she attended the famous Le Cordon Bleu cooking school and trained with some of Paris' best known chefs. Affectionately referred to by the duo as "Rue de Loo," the apartment is in easy walking distance to the famous Musee d'Orsay, which was just a crumbling train station in the Childs' day.

La_Pitchoune_from_the_Pool_area.jpegPhoto: Meyers Away

? To escape the city, the Childs built themselves a small stone getaway in Provence, dubbed "La Pitchoune." The modest structure was constructed on land owned by fellow author Simone Beck and her husband Jean Fischbacher, and the couple would come back to this summer home long after they had returned to the United States. In 1992, with Paul's health deteriorating and Beck having just passed away, the Child's relinquished their claim to the cottage.

julia-child-house1.jpegPhoto: Centers and Squares

? The Childs returned from France in 1956 and took up residence in the same D.C. home, where Julia conducted cooking classes in the kitchen. Ever the wanderers, Julia and Paul were soon laying down roots in Cambridge, Mass., where they would make their final home together at 103 Irving Street. Julia regularly filmed for her television show here, making the kitchen world famous. She would later donate the kitchen to the Smithsonian and, in her will, the $2.35M proceeds from the sale of the house to Smith College, who used the bequest to build the school's first campus center.

His funeral was to be held at Congregation Emanu-El, a prominent Upper East Side synagogue. The composer died Aug. 6 in Los Angeles at age 68.

Hamlisch composed or arranged hundreds of scores for musicals and movies, including "A Chorus Line" on Broadway and the films "The Sting," ''Sophie's Choice," ''Ordinary People" and "The Way We Were."

He won three Oscars, four Emmys, four Grammys, a Tony, a Pulitzer and three Golden Globes.

His versatility and ear for musical hooks meant he was as comfortable writing songs for Barbra Streisand as he was for a light Woody Allen comedy.

How To Have A Healthy Lifetime Relationship With Money ?

Money may be the last thing you care deeply for, but this does not mean that it is not extremely important. You should soak up all the financial knowledge that you can so that you can maintain control over your money and bypass frustrating finance problems. By reading this article, you will gain a greater understanding of personal finances.

Your expenses and income should be used to plan out your budget. First, look to see how much money your family brings in. Remember to add in all types of income that you receive, including income from jobs and rental properties. Understanding your income versus expenditures will help you to truly evaluate if you are spending too much. To be clear, if you are spending more than you are bringing in, you are spending too much.

Determining your expenses is the second step in creating an effective budget. List all of your expenditures, including recurring expenses like regular monthly bills and groceries, as well as less regular expenses, like money spent on dining out, or the occasional coffee at work. Don?t forget to document your wife or husband?s spending habits. Do not forget to include bills that are paid on a quarterly, semi-annual, or annual basis. It is important that the list is as comprehensive as possible so that it accurately reflects the expenses you are incurring.

After you figure out how much money you are making and spending, you can begin constructing a budget. Begin by listing the payments you make each month and your expenses and asking yourself which ones might be lowered or cut entirely. You can save a lot of money by making your own coffee at home. There are always some areas in which you can cut back on expenses.

Home improvement projects can be a great way to save money on bills. You can reduce your energy bill by making changes such as replacing or insulating your water heater and replacing or sealing gaps in your windows. At the same time, repairing minor leaks reduces your water usage. Another simple idea is to make the most of your appliances, such as dishwashers and washing machines, by only running them when you have a full load.

Try out energy efficient appliances in place of your current appliances. These appliances use less energy and burn less money. Unplug items that have constant lights. These small lights require a constant stream of electricity, so when they are left on for long periods of time, the energy costs start to accumulate.

Proper insulation will keep you from losing lots of heat through your walls and ceiling. These types of projects are a great investment.

By utilizing these methods, you will be able to save more money and make sure your expenses are not out of control. The money you save can go towards home improvements or energy-efficient appliances to lower your utility bills, saving you even more money in the long run. It is a great way to both increase your standard of living, and obtain better control over your finances.
