Golan Druse start to turn against Syria's Assad

BUKATA, Golan Heights (AP) ? The raging civil war just across the cease-fire line in Syria is posing an uncomfortable political choice for the Druse people in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights.

Do they maintain their traditional loyalty to the government of Bashar Assad, whose family has vowed to take back the territory? Or should they support the burgeoning Arab revolt against Assad's harsh rule?

In the shifting sands of the Middle East, the Druse again find themselves a people caught in the middle.

In Druse villages close enough to hear the fighting, families and friends are divided between backers of the revolt and supporters of the regime. A Druse doctor predicted his people would demand Assad's downfall, while a butcher in a nearby town denounced the Syrian uprising as a foreign conspiracy.

Israel captured the Golan from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war. In 1981 it annexed the strategic plateau, 65 kilometers (40 miles) long and 20 kilometers (12 miles) wide, because militarily, it commands Israel's north. The international community has not recognized the Israeli annexation. In negotiations, Israel has offered to exchange the territory for full peace, but talks broke down a decade ago over exact borders and other issues.

The Druse residents of the Golan Heights were offered Israeli citizenship, but only a few accepted. Many assumed that someday the territory would revert to Syria, by peace or by war, and those who identified with Israel might be treated as traitors. Most Druse identified as Syrians and the older generation in particular found the offer of Israeli citizenship an affront.

The Druse ? there are 20,000 in the Golan Heights ? follow a secretive offshoot of Islam whose adherents live primarily in Syria, Israel, Lebanon and Jordan. Over the centuries, they have tried to keep to themselves, offering allegiance to whoever was in control of their territory.

The four main Golan Druse villages are near the cease-fire line with Syria. In the early weeks of the uprising against Assad last year, only a tiny minority of Golan's Druse would publicly support the rebels. Now those voices are getting stronger.

"Most of the people here cannot distinguish between Assad and their homeland. They are looking to him as the face of the homeland and waiting for him to liberate us from the (Israeli) occupation," said Ali Abu Awad, a doctor in the village of Bukata. "But these days, when they can see what Assad is doing there, the big lie has started to fall. I think they will demand the fall of Assad."

Over the past week, he said most people in Bukata have climbed nearby hills to watch the fighting nearby.

"It's a different feeling to see with your eyes. You feel very useless, very empty, to see this army demolishing the civilian population," Abu Awad said.

In nearby Majdal Shams, Assad supporters spoke out.

Hasan Fakhr Deen, a butcher, called the Syria conflict "a conspiracy of outside states."

He insisted that Syrians remained united and felt the nearby shelling and smoke across the border were legitimate attacks against "people who want to change the regime in Syria."

Besides its strategic importance, the Golan Heights are also a major source of water and recreation. Israelis flock there for hikes, an Israeli winery and the country's only ski resort.

The Druse are a part of that landscape, and Israeli tourists as well as soldiers frequent their restaurants.

Still, the Druse stay in touch with their Syria relatives and are sometimes allowed to cross for weddings, university studies and religious pilgrimages. Golan-grown apples are also annually transferred over land to Syria to help Druse farmers market their crop. Golan Druse who marry Syrian nationals automatically lose their right to live in the Golan, tearing families apart.

The bloody crackdown in Syria has led the Golan Druse to begin speaking more freely.

Mahmoud Amasha, a Bukata apple farmer and insurance agent, said he was "convinced that the number of people opposing this regime grows every day."

But he said divisions over Assad's popularity in Bukata have "cast a shadow over the people in this town."

Syria's Sunni majority makes up the backbone of the opposition, and minorities such as the Druse and Christians fear they will be marginalized ? or even targeted ? if Sunnis take over.

Assad and the ruling elite also belong to a minority sect, the Alawites, a Shiite offshoot. Assad's regime always pushed a secular ideology, which was seen as giving minorities a measure of protection.

Residents say demonstrations break out every few weeks, some in favor of the regime and some against. The divisions have even pitted family against family and friend against friend.

Three teenage girls walking through Bukata's central square held differing views, with two supporting Assad and one opposing him.

Ruba Amasha, 17, said the three have remained friends, but that is not always the case.

"For instance, a pro-Assad person will say 'hi' to a friend on the street, and if the other person's against (Assad), they'll just keep walking," she said.

Alaa Alwely, a driver, said the Syrian civil war would likely delay any chance of the Golan returning to Syria. Given what was happening across the border, he said he was fine with that.

"I've lived a respectful life here," he said. "I was born under occupation. I'm not sure if Syrian rule would be better or not."

There are basically two types of rents that are listed on the search for commercial space. This is the gross income and net income. They are two separate ends of the spectrum of what is included in the rent. Gross income is all rental. An actual gross income includes all the above expenses (property taxes, insurance, maintenance, administration, utilities, etc, etc) and any other expenses that may be given to a specific property. Net rent is a type of rent does not include anything else. Net rent is simply the amount you pay the landlord the right to use their space for a period of time. In a single leased property the tenant only pays all additional costs themselves. In multi-occupied properties, such as office buildings or shopping centers to multi-tenant retail net income is often accompanied by additional income (also called CAM / Taxes which means common area and maintenance, plus property taxes) . The additional revenue covers the expenses mentioned above. The additional revenue is usually based on an estimated value of the previous years operating expenses. The total cost of ownership are added together and divided by the square of material cost of the building. The costs are then allocated to each tenant in proportion to the amount of space with the building. So if a building has 10,000 square feet of rentable space, and the tenant has 1,000 square feet of retail store, then pay 10% of total expenditures. The additional revenue is quoted in a Ft per square meter basis as well. In different parts of the country, the income may be quoted differently. In Winnipeg rents quoted are usually cited as a price per square foot per year. In other parts of the country where you can be cited as the price per square foot per month. If in doubt, ask.

Since graduating a decade ago, Andrea has shown a particular passion for encouraging younger alumni to stay engaged with their alma mater. Despite her busy career as director of government affairs for MultiCare Health System, Andrea has been a member of the Alumni Council since its inception and currently serves as coordinator for the Tacoma Regional Alumni Club. In this role Andrea has planned and implemented scores of volunteer-led alumni outings. Under Andrea?s leadership, the Tacoma Club has connected more than 1,000 alumni to one another and back to Puget Sound. Some of these alumni are serving as mentors to current students. A student mentor herself, Andrea is an advocate for the Alumni Sharing Knowledge (ASK) Network and has spoken to current students on numerous occasions, most recently welcoming the Class of 2015 to Puget Sound at Convocation. Currently, large doses of chemotherapy are required when treating certain forms of cancer, resulting in toxic side effects. The chemicals enter the body and work to destroy or shrink the tumor, but also harm vital organs and drastically affect bodily functions. Now, University of Missouri scientists have found a more efficient way of targeting prostate tumors by using gold nanoparticles and a compound found in tea leaves. This new treatment would require doses that are thousands of times smaller than chemotherapy and do not travel through the body inflicting damage to healthy areas. The study is being published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

High-speed camera tracks ping-pong ball in flight

Camera operators at sports events have to have catlike reflexes in order to capture the quick movements and frequent redirection of the ball and players. Researchers in Japan have created an automated camera system that may be able to track those objects better than the most seasoned cameraman. In action, it's almost uncanny how well it works.

Part of the difficulty of operating such cameras is that they are very large, with heavy lenses and complex controls. And even when the operator is assisted mechanically in moving this huge object, the limitations of human reflexes come into play: it may take a highly?trained cameraman a tenth of a second (100ms) or more to respond to a sudden change in the gameplay, perhaps causing the ball to leave the camera's frame momentarily.

The Ishikawa Oku Laboratory at the University of Tokyo has addressed both these concerns by making it so not only is the object in view tracked automatically, but the camera doesn't have to move at all. Instead, what the camera sees is controlled by a pair of small mirrors that can be moved quickly and precisely. They've named them?"saccade mirrors," after the tiny, quick movements made by human eyes.

The lab focuses on high-speed vision and mechanisms; not long ago they showed off a robotic hand that would beat you every time at rock-paper-scissors by observing your move as you made it, and instantly choosing the winning one, quicker than the eye could detect. This system uses a similar high-speed, computer-vision setup (shooting at 1000 frames per second), but instead of tracking gestures, it's tracking the position and movement of an object and relaying that information to the saccade mirrors.

Watch how quickly the system can track a ping-pong ball in flight:

It only takes around 3.5ms for the mirrors to change position, even if it's a major shift. That means that the camera could switch between two players on opposite sides of the field 20 times before a human cameraman could react to one of them moving. It's still not fast enough that there's no lag when something changes direction quickly, but it's only perceptible when watching in super-slow motion.

The camera setup shoots in 1080p and the lab's description of the technology suggests they will be pitching it to broadcasters and camera companies for more widespread adoption.

US Navy ship fires on boat off Dubai, killing 1

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? A U.S. Navy ship opened fire on a small boat racing toward it in broad daylight Monday near the Gulf city of Dubai, killing one person, according to American officials.

The rare shooting not far from approaches to the Strait of Hormuz comes at a period of heightened tensions between the United States and nearby Iran.

A UAE official said the vessel was a fishing boat.

There was no immediate sign of Iranian involvement, or any indication that the incident was a reprise of al-Qaida's 2000 bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen. But the incident will likely focus further attention on the risks American vessels face in the Gulf even as the Navy beefs up its presence in the region.

Lt. Greg Raelson, a spokesman for the Navy's Bahrain-based 5th Fleet, said a security team aboard the USNS Rappahannock issued a series of warnings before resorting to lethal force about 10 miles (15 kilometers) off the coast of Dubai's Jebel Ali port.

"The U.S. crew repeatedly attempted to warn the vessel's operators to turn away from their deliberate approach. When those efforts failed to deter the approaching vessel, the security team on the Rappahannock fired rounds from a .50-caliber machine gun," he said.

Raelson said the incident, which happened at 2:50 p.m. local time, is under investigation.

The Rappahannock is an oiler used to fuel other Navy ships while they are at sea.

The United Arab Emirates, which includes the commercial hub of Dubai and the oil-rich capital Abu Dhabi, is a key American ally in the Gulf. American warships frequently visit Dubai's Jebel Ali port, a popular rest stop among U.S. sailors.

A U.S. consular official told The Associated Press that one person was killed and three wounded in the shooting.

The official gave no other details, but it appeared that Navy personnel could have seen the boat ? mistakenly or not ? as a threat in Gulf waters not far from Iran's maritime boundaries. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the incident between the two allies.

Tariq Ahmed al-Haidan, the assistant to the UAE Foreign Minister for political affairs, confirmed the number of dead and injured.

He said in a brief statement to the UAE's official news agency WAM that all were Indian citizens, and they were on board a fishing boat when they came under fire. Emirati authorities are investigating the incident, he added.

The white-hulled boat was inspected by dozens of police officers and other Emirati officials after the incident in a small Dubai harbor used by fishermen and recreational sailors.

The boat appeared to be a civilian vessel about 30 feet (9 meters) long and powered by three outboard motors. It had no obvious military markings.

Similar boats are used for fishing in the region, though Iran's Revolutionary Guard also employs relatively small, fast-moving craft in the Gulf.

Rescue workers were seen carrying one person in a body bag off the boat and placing it in an ambulance as fishermen looked on. Officials moved the boat from the harbor shortly afterward.

The U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi had no immediate comment on the incident, referring all questions to the Navy.

U.S. military vessels routinely cross paths with Iranian ships in international waters in the Gulf without incident, but speed boats from Iran's Revolutionary Guard have passed close to U.S. ships in incidents that have raised alarm in Washington.

In early 2008, then President Bush accused Iran of a "provocative act" after five small Iranian craft buzzed around the destroyer USS Hopper.

Theodore Karasik, a security expert at the Dubai-based Institute for Near East and Gulf Military Analysis, did not rule out Iranian involvement.

"There are certain factions within the Iranian political universe who are seeking a fight. And this is one way in which to do it," he said.

Karasik noted there have been no known attacks so close to Jebel Ali, which is seen as a secure port in the region. He suggested that the attack might have been a way for Iranian forces to test U.S. defenses, though he acknowledged it was too early to know for sure.

Tensions are elevated in the Gulf after Iran last week renewed threats to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz ? the route for one-fifth of the world's oil ? in retaliation for tighter sanctions over Iran's nuclear program.

The U.S. recently boosted its naval presence in the Gulf with additional minesweepers and other warships. The Pentagon said Monday it is sending another aircraft carrier to the Middle East several months early to ensure it has two carriers continuously in the region.

If you want to argue "Well maybe they have super cool tractor beams so they can amplify their gravitational pull and their massive engines can keep them stationary while they're doing it!" the obvious counter is "They don't, that's why they went with the laser, since they thought about it. Also big laser is more menacing in a platform which has the primary purpose of intimidation. Additionally the big laser doubles as a way to destroy enemy capital ships from well outside their own engagement radius".

Daemen Gains Acceptance Into NCAA Division II

Administrators at Daemen College learned today that the College?s application for membership in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II has been granted by that organization?s membership committee.? Notification was given by the NCAA in an email to Director of Athletics William Morris.? The Wildcats will immediately begin the transition phase ? a three-year process at minimum ? to become compliant with all NCAA rules and regulations.? In doing so, Daemen becomes the first college in the Buffalo area to become affiliated with NCAA Division II.

?We are very pleased that the NCAA has accepted our application for Division II membership,? Daemen College President Dr. Edwin Clausen said.? ?It represents a great opportunity for Daemen College.? We are excited about the prospect of competition at a new level; one that will improve our already successful athletic program, strengthen our institutional image, and exemplify our core values.? I would like to thank the entire Daemen community for all their hard work on the NCAA application; this truly was a team effort.? We are grateful for the support we have received from the East Coast Conference Commissioner, Bob Dranoff, and all its? member institutions.?

In 2012-13, the athletic department will enter in what?s known as Candidacy Year 1, followed by Candidacy Year 2 in 2013-14.? The third year of the transition is known as a provisional year in which the Wildcats will drop their other national affiliations and will comply with additional NCAA requirements.

Supporting Daemen throughout the approval process has been the East Coast Conference (ECC), whose Council of Presidents will vote on extending the Wildcats an invitation to join their stable sometime this fall.

?On behalf of the East Coast Conference Council of Presidents and all of our member institutions, we are very excited to hear the wonderful news regarding Daemen College and their acceptance into the membership process for NCAA Division II,? said ECC Commissioner Dr. Robert Dranoff.? ?We believe, under the leadership of President Clausen, Director of Athletics Bill Morris and the administrators, staff members and coaches who have worked so hard on this process that Daemen will continue to?develop into a successful Division II institution and an important member of the ECC.? We look forward to working with them closely in the coming years.?

To ensure its? teams the chance of competing in post-season play, Daemen will compete within the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) ? formerly the National Small College Athletic Association (NSCAA) ? for the next two years while complying with the rigors of Candidacy Year 1 and Candidacy Year 2 of the NCAA.? The USCAA boasts more than 80 members nationwide and provides National Championships in 10 different sports.? Daemen had previously competed in the National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) since the mid-1980?s, but was forced to leave that organization at the culmination of the 2011-12 academic year due to the College?s pursuit of NCAA Division II membership.

?We are all extremely excited that the NCAA Membership Committee has approved our application to begin the NCAA Division II membership process,? Morris said.? ?I would like to thank Dr. Clausen, Dr. Richanne Mankey, and the entire Daemen community for their support with the application.? This marks a new beginning for Daemen College Athletics; one that is exciting for the staff, coaches, student-athletes, and alumni.? Slump in London financial services jobs market

June saw a massive fall in the number of financial services job vacancies in London - down 33% compared to May and 53% down on the same time last year.

Morgan McKinley Financial Services' London Employment Monitor shows the number of jobs available in June across the city's financial services sector, falling from 3,915 to 2,630 - the lowest number of vacancies in the City's jobs market since December 10. Compared to the same time last year, the number of positions has dropped from 5,544 to 2,630.

Over the same period, the number of professionals entering the jobs market declined by 3% from 6,419 in May to 6,251 in June.

Salaries remained relatively stable, with a 1% drop month-on-month. Compared to the same time last year this is a 4% increase to ?53,976. It was also just above the monthly average salary for the past 12 year, which was ?52,156.

"With recent economic indicators around the globe turning negative, a drop in the number of job vacancies being released across the City in June 12 is unsurprising. The scale of drop however, at 33% is more of a surprise," said Andrew Evans, chief operations officer at Morgan McKinley. "The relative economic stability we saw in Q1 led to a short period of increased job opportunities between March and May - this recent jobs decline is clearly a reality check."

Evans said that firms are also taking longer to recruit. "Some roles inevitably require an investment of time to find the right person, but delays of several weeks, sometimes into months is more characteristic of the current hiring market for non-business critical roles," he said.

Regulatory and corporate governance roles remain a relatively bright spot as are project management/ business analyst roles on the contract side. "Banks and asset management houses continue to prioritise these requirements and are hiring accordingly," said Evans.
