Retreat From Stock Market Continues ? NYTimes.com ? Ye Olde ...

After Facebook, More Fear of Stock Market

By NATHANIEL POPPER

Published: May 28, 2012

?

The excitement surrounding?Facebook?s initial public offering was enough for Alex Tsesis, a law professor, to give the stock market one more try. But after the company?s stock encountered technical problems then sputtered for three days, he sold his few hundred shares for a $2,200 loss and vowed to end his equity gambles for good.

Brendan Mcdermid/Reuters

Spectators waited outside the Nasdaq stock exchange for Facebook?s share price to be posted during its debut on May 18.

Bebeto Matthews/Associated Press

Monitors in Times Square on May 18 showed the news of Facebook trading on the Nasdaq.

?I?m just extremely skeptical about the ability of a retail purchaser to be able to play on a level field in the market,? said Mr. Tsesis, who is 45 and lives in Chicago. ?I?m just trying to get out of stocks.?

Mr. Tsesis is part of a growing retreat from the stock market, a trend that began before the Facebook debut. The portion of Americans invested in the stock market dropped this year to its lowest level since Gallup started asking, every two years, in 1998 ? 53 percent said they were in the market in April, compared with a high of 67 percent in 2002 and 65 percent as recently as 2007, before the financial crisis. A Bankrate poll in April found that only 17 percent of respondents were more likely to invest in the stock market, even with the small amount of interest they earn on bank deposits.

The financial industry had hoped that Facebook, the highly anticipated and biggest-ever tech offering, would rekindle ordinary investors? excitement in stocks. Instead, first-day trading snags, a 16 percent decline in the new stock?s price and suggestions that warnings were exchanged among professional investors about Facebook?s prospects have stoked fears that the stock market may not be safe for everyone.

?This added gasoline to a fire that was already burning,? said Craig Ferrantino, the president of the financial advisory Craig James Financial Services in Melville, N.Y. .

Mr. Ferrantino recounted a breakfast for his clients shortly after the offering in which the biggest topic of discussion was what the Facebook deal had revealed and the sense that ?the deck is stacked against them.?

Perhaps the best indicator of the broader movement away from stocks is an annual survey done by the Investment Company Institute, which has shown that the percentage of American households invested in domestic stocks, including directly or through any other vehicle whether through?mutual funds?orexchange-traded funds, has fallen every year since the financial crisis to a low in 2011 of 46.4 percent, down from a high of 53 percent in 2001.

Stocks remain favored by millions of Americans who invest big parts of their retirement savings in them, and investors who have held the course have benefited from the 29 percent rise in the benchmark Standard & Poor?s 500-stock index since the beginning of 2009. This does not include the dividends that would have been earned.

For decades, participation in the stock markets increased as?401(k)?retirement plans grew in popularity and retail brokers created easier access for small traders. The Dow Jones industrial average rose an average of 8.4 percent each year from 1950 to 2000, with some extended periods of little to no growth.

Since then, though, the bursting of the Internet bubble in 2001 followed by the financial crisis in 2008 have created a so-called lost decade in which broad stock indexes wound up not that far beyond where they started.

Small investors are part of a bigger flight from American stocks. Institutional investors like high-frequency traders have been drawn to other assets like currencies, and pension funds have shifted more money into alternatives, like?private equity?investments. This has led to a steady decline in the volume of trading in the American stock market and a drop in revenue for New York financial firms. But it has also raised broader questions about the prospects of a market that has long been the central cog for American companies raising money to grow and create jobs.

?If investors lose confidence then capital formation doesn?t function as well,? said David Weild, a former vice chairman of Nasdaq, and the founder of Capital Markets Advisory Partners.

Among the ordinary investors who are helping drive this shift, the motivations are varied. Some are retiring and making a conservative move to less risky assets like bonds. Others are put off by the economic uncertainty as Europe fails to find solutions to its debt problems. But there has also been a growing din of complaints about the flaws in the structure of the markets ? as displayed by the Facebook debut.

Robert Diepersloot, a dairy farmer in Madera, Calif., said that watching the Facebook offering confirmed all the fears and suspicions that led him earlier this year to take out the savings, in the five figures, that he and his wife had invested in stocks and stock mutual funds and move it into real estate investments.

?We just pulled out completely,? Mr. Diepersloot said. ?We?ve lost trust in the whole scenario.?

Mr. Diepersloot?s wife, Willemina, said that there was no one event that drove the family out of stocks, just a disappointment with recent returns and a slow erosion of faith in the reliability of the market.

Finance industry professionals are wondering what might persuade Mr. Diepersloot and others like him to change their minds, given that the stock market?s rise over the last three years has not done the job. Many insiders say that may happen only if interest rates begin to rise, after years of falling, and drive down the value of bonds, which is where investors have shifted.

Facebook?s stock offering appeared to be doing the job of drumming up interest before it went awry. At one discount broker, ShareBuilder, the number of new accounts opened was 20 times the average and trading activity was up about 50 percent on May 18 across all discount brokers, according to Richard Repetto, a Sandler O?Neill analyst who researches brokers.

Fuad Ahmed, the chief executive of the discount broker Just2Trade, said that by the end of Friday about 80 percent of the customers who had bought Facebook dumped it.

By Mr. Repetto?s analysis, trading activity at the retail brokers on the Monday after the I.P.O. was back where it had been before Facebook began trading.

Obama signs Ex-Im Bank bill into law

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama has signed legislation that renews the charter of the Export-Import Bank for three years and increases the bank?s lending cap to $140 billion from the current $100 billion. The bank is the government?s vehicle for promoting U.S. export sales.

Obama says the move will help thousands of businesses sell their products and services overseas and help them create jobs at home. The president says the independent federal agency is a key factor toward reaching his goal of doubling exports over five years.

Lawmakers passed the legislation earlier this month amid resistance from conservatives who argued that the bank distorts the market. The bank had support from numerous business groups. Last year it provided about $32 billion in loans, loan guarantees and credit financing, helping support 290,000 jobs.

The Hatfields and McCoys say? 'Avoid Your Personal Finance ...

If you were to just read a brass tacks synopsis of the true story on which the History Channel?s new biopic, The Hatfields and McCoys is based, it would read like the teleplay for an episode of All My Children.

However, the tale of these two feuding families provides us all with a valuable lesson about personal finance. One of the biggest mistakes Americans, and there are many of us, make when they are in debt is refusing to pay smaller, be they disputed debts and communicate with companies, creditors or debt collectors. Just ask the ill-fated characters in this American mythopoetic nightmare about a failure to settle small differences and communicate.

No one can say what went through the minds of the actual men and women who endured the consequences of the real dispute, but from the privileged position of the television audience it looks like a gangland style murder spree was set in motion over one lousy pig.

I once refused to pay, what I rightfully regarded as nothing short of extortion, a final balance of a Comcast bill for service I never received. Having already tangled rhetorically with customer service agents and sales managers, I stopped taking their calls and severed all other forms of communication. Little did I know, being slightly na?ve at the time, was that my incommunicado status would set off a blood bath in my credit report. Pride and hubris murdered my credit score and marred my report for the better part of a decade.

Like the Hatfields and McCoy?s, I would have done well to continue disputing, negotiating or at least communicating with Comcast. When people are talking no one is shooting. Take it from America?s most grievous episode of the Family Feud, what?s the number one way to keep the vigilante credit mob at bay? settle the dispute over the pig equitably.

Insert Coin: ZIP-Shooter lets you dolly around or track straight (video)

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.

insert-coin-zip-shooter-camera-dolly

If you're tired of shaky-vision in your films but don't have Spielbergian budgets, the ZIP-Shooter might be your secret weapon. By manipulating the wheels, you can track your DSLR, iPhone or other video cam in a straight line or around a bend, and use it as a tabletop, low or even worm-vision underslung dolly. With a 20-pound max weight limit, it'll handle most DSLR and lens combos, and you could even squeak on a light Red Scarlet package, while still collapsing it into a camera bag after usage. ZIP-Shooter is underway with $1,203 so far and a goal of $25,000 -- to see if you'd like to pledge $350 to get one, truck past the break and check the video.

SAN FRANCISCO DE MACORIS, Dominican Republic (AP) ? An elusive songbird that wings its way each year from austere mountaintops of the northeastern U.S. to the steamy forests of the Caribbean has inspired the creation of what conservationists hope will be a new model for nature reserves in a country that has long struggled with deforestation.

The reserve is taking shape in a lushly overgrown former cattle ranch measuring about 1,000 acres, at the edge of a deep green forest in the Dominican Republic's rugged northeast. Conservation-minded Dominican and U.S. investors have acquired the plot as a pilot project, hoping to protect what they say is a global biodiversity hotspot that's home to dozens of threatened species.

Tentatively known as the Reserva Privada Zorzal, the government sees the reserve as a potential example, showing that such land can be put to better uses than burning down the trees to convert it to pasture, a typical approach in this Caribbean country with only about 40 percent of its forest cover left. Neighboring Haiti, which shares the island of Hispaniola, has virtually none of its forest standing.

Jesus Moreno, a Dominican businessman whose family is partially funding the reserve, says the portion of the property where most of the trees have already been removed is well-suited to low-intensity, organic agriculture. He plans to grow macadamia trees and cacao, the raw material in chocolate, while allowing the forest to regenerate, in perpetuity, on three-fourths of the holding. The country's environment minister is scheduled to inaugurate the reserve project on June 5.

"I am not trying to make this into a big business and make a lot of money," said Moreno, whose family's ventures also include a nursery that grows macadamia trees and the country's only factory processing the nuts. "We are trying to create a model and break the cycle of destruction."

The concept of setting aside private land for conservation in land trusts or easements is an old one, long in use in the U.S. and elsewhere, but still rare in the Dominican Republic, a largely poor country.

Some private landowners have set aside tracts for ecotourism and nature reserves, and the government has designated more than 130 public reserves. But much of the country's forests face threats from development, agriculture and illegal timber harvesting, carving what remains into ever smaller chunks that leave species isolated and vulnerable.

In practice, the government reserves usually provide protection to endangered species in name only, said Sesar Rodriguez, the executive director of the Dominican Environmental Consortium.

Among those species at risk is the zorzal migratorio, known in English as the Bicknell's thrush. The palm-size, brownish songbird mostly comes out at dusk or dawn and, like many birds, heads south in the winter. It divides its time between the Caribbean islands and mountaintop forests in the northeastern U.S. and southern Canada that generally rise above 3,000 feet.

The bird is considered vulnerable, with an estimated fewer than 100,000 in the wild, because it occupies a narrow range of habitat that's under pressure on both sides of its migratory route, said Chris Rimmer, an ornithologist at the Vermont Center for Ecostudies who is an expert on the Bicknell's thrush and helped establish the reserve. Threats to the species in the U.S. include air pollution and loss of the conifer forest habitat from development and climate change.

It's not a high-profile species likely to spur public passions, and some bird species in the Dominican Republic are under a more dire threat, Rimmer readily acknowledges. But he and others are nonetheless devoted to the Bicknell's thrush, what he calls an "enigmatic" bird.

"It's much bigger than just this one little migratory songbird," Rimmer said. "If we protect it we automatically protect all the other elements of the flora and fauna, many of which are themselves under siege."

The Cordillera Septentrional range, a mist-shrouded cloud forest that shimmers an emerald green in the distance from the former pasture acquired for the reserve, is also considered habitat for vulnerable species such as the Hispaniolan parrot and mammals such as the Hispaniolan solenodon, a nocturnal burrower that resembles a possum with a long snout.

Rimmer, for one, has spent countless hours studying the Bicknell's thrush in the granite mountains of New England and the dense forests of the Dominican Republic, listening for its nasal, swirling call. "It's kind of ethereal, I guess, kind of mysterious," he said of the sound.

He and other researchers noticed that as the Dominican Republic was losing forest, female Bicknell's were being crowded out of their prime habitat by the larger males, depriving them of food they need for the journey back to North America.

He began working with the Dominican Environmental Consortium and others to find a way to expand two areas designated as protected by the government ? the Loma Quita Espuela, which Moreno's father helped found, and the Guaconejo reserves.

This loose-knit group eventually found land owned by the family of an elderly doctor that was just a few miles west of the Loma Quita Espuela reserve, prime habitat for the thrush and near the country's cacao-growing center of San Pedro Macoris, a combination of factors that seemed perfect for a blend of profit and preservation, said Charles Kerchner, an American working as a project manager for the consortium. Part of the land was still an active cattle ranch, the rest already in various stages of regrowth and some had been left untouched for so long that it had become fairly healthy secondary growth forest - not virgin, by any means, but not bad.

Most of the money for Reserva Privada Zorzal came from the Eddy Foundation of Willsboro, New York, and Moreno's family, which previously owned a controlling stake in the Helados Bon chain of ice cream stores in the Dominican Republic and neighboring Haiti, Kerchner said.

Danneris Santana, a vice minister in the natural resources ministry, said about a dozen new private reserves are in process of getting approval under regulations that were updated last year. Moreno and others involved in the zorzal project say several landowners in the vicinity of their site are close to adopting similar plans.

"While it's great that we are doing (the Zorzal reserve), it's an isolated project and we need others to protect their land as well," Kerchner said.

Much will depend on the economic viability of the effort. Besides the macadamia and cacao, Kerchner said they are looking for other sustainable uses of the surrounding forest, such as honey production and high-end chocolate.

The Dominican Republic is already a producer of organic cacao in the fertile hills around San Francisco de Macoris and has a growing macadamia nut crop, but the country is not a significant global supplier of either commodity. Most of the world's cacao comes from Africa and Indonesia; Hawaii and Australia are the main producers of macadamia nuts.

The backers of the project expect to allow public access but the plans are not yet defined. The property is more than an hour's drive along a bone-jarring road from the nearest town.

"To be a sustainable business, we need to get value from this forest," Kerchner said.

Egypt's Brotherhood scrambling to broaden support

CAIRO (AP) ? The Muslim Brotherhood is scrambling to broaden its appeal to liberals, leftists and Christians after official results Monday showed that the Islamist group's candidate will face ousted autocrat Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister in next month's runoff for president of Egypt.

Violence flared late Monday when several hundred people ransacked the Cairo campaign headquarters of the ex-premier, Ahmed Shafiq. They smashed windows, threw out campaign signs, tore up posters and set the building on fire, according to witnesses and security. No one was hurt. The office is in a Cairo residential neighborhood.

The Brotherhood's candidate, Mohammed Morsi, will go head-to-head against Shafiq, also a former air force commander, in the June 16-17 runoff. They were the top vote-getters in last week's first round of voting.

Announcing the final results, election commission chief Farouq Sultan said that Morsi won close to 5.8 million votes, or almost 25 percent, while Shafiq garnered 5.5 million votes, or nearly 24 percent. Finishing third was leftist candidate Hamdeen Sabahi with 4.8 million votes, or about 21 percent.

To get the support it needs, the Brotherhood must tone down its religious rhetoric and offer far-reaching concessions, such as protecting the right to protest and strike, election-watchers said.

None of the 13 candidates had been expected to get the more than 50 percent of the vote needed to win outright. Still, Morsi's top finish was a surprisingly strong showing, because he was widely viewed as a weak candidate and because the Brotherhood's popularity has eroded recently because of a series of missteps.

Soon after the election commission announced the results, several hundred Sabahi supporters gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the birthplace of last year's uprising, chanting slogans against the military, Morsi and Shafiq. Similar numbers gathered in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, where some of the protesters tore down a large Shafiq poster.

Turnout among the country's 50 million registered voters was more than 46 percent, Sultan said.

Shafiq is widely viewed as an extension of the Mubarak regime, and the Morsi-Shafiq runoff is the most polarizing contest possible. In many ways, it mirrors the conflict between Mubarak, himself a career air force officer like Shafiq, and the Islamists he jailed and tortured throughout his years in power.

For Morsi to win, said Khaled Abdel-Hameed, one of the leaders of last year's 18-day uprising against Mubarak, he must make concrete concessions on specific issues.

"A protest boycott of the election is an option," said Abdel-Hameed. "If not, we want Morsi to adopt a package of legislation guaranteeing freedoms, labor union activity and the right to strike and protest."

The U.S.-educated Morsi appears willing to broaden his appeal but has offered few specifics.

He has vowed to be a "president for all Egyptians" ? a nod to minority Christians who voted overwhelmingly for Shafiq. He has pledged to work to realize the goals of the revolution, a promise designed to appease the pro-democracy youth groups behind the uprising that toppled Mubarak. And he has pledged a national unity government.

"We are certain that the remnants of Mubarak's regime and his gang, and those that belong to it that are trying to bring back the former regime will fall flat and will land in the garbage bin of history," he said.

Morsi's success, said Middle East expert Shadi Hamid of the Brookings Institution in Doha, Qatar, depends on how explicit and concrete the Brotherhood promises will be and whether the group can reassure significant segments of the population that view it as opportunist and hungry for power.

Pro-democracy activists say that the Brotherhood did not join their 2011 anti-Mubarak uprising until it became clear it had irreversible momentum and that it later abandoned them during their protests against military rule so as not to lose the goodwill of the generals who took over from Mubarak.

But the alternative ? Shafiq ? will be hard for them to accept.

"Leftists and liberals can hold their noses and vote for Morsi," Hamid said. "The Muslim Brotherhood is moving to the center and not everyone who did not vote for Morsi in the first round was actually voting against him."

The Brotherhood was empowered by the ouster of Mubarak 15 months ago, emerging as the nation's most dominant political force after spending the best part of nearly 60 years as an illegal, underground organization. It went on to win just under half of all seats in Parliament.

But it has failed to translate its dominance in the legislature into real political power, partly because the generals wield near-absolute authority, and also because of the perceived poor performance of its lawmakers.

Its credibility took a hit when it reversed an earlier decision not to field a candidate in the presidential election. Later, it attempted to pack a 100-member panel assigned to draft the constitution with its own lawmakers and other Islamists.

Khalil el-Anani, an expert on Islamic groups from Britain's Durham University, said the Brotherhood needs to change its thinking and cast aside the "persecuted" approach left over from years in the political wilderness.

"They don't realize that things have changed around them," he said. "In order for him to win, Morsi must reinvent himself as a nonpartisan politician."

Japan eyeing 15% nuclear in energy mix: minister

Japan may look to generating 15 percent of its electricity needs from nuclear power, a minister said Friday, as the country seeks to rebalance its energy supply after the Fukushima disaster.

A government panel studying future energy policy has presented several options, from one that sees a nuclear free future by 2030 to one that seeks to increase dependence on the technology to 35 percent by that date.

"Fifteen percent can be one base," environment minister Goshi Hosono told reporters, noting that government limits on the operation of nuclear power stations to a maximum 40 years would be in line with this figure.

Hosono and other ministers will discuss the government's new energy policy next month.

Prior to tsunami-sparked meltdowns at Fukushima, resource-poor but energy-hungry Japan relied on nuclear for about a third of its electricity needs, a figure policymakers intended to boost to 50 percent.

But since the accident, increasing public distrust has meant reactors shuttered for routine safety checks have not been allowed to restart, such that the country's entire stable is now offline.

Imported fossil fuels have been used to plug the gap, much to the detriment of Japan's balance of trade, amid calls for a re-think of energy policy.

Despite downgrade, Beryl still soaks Memorial Day

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) ? Joyce Connolly and her daughters left their home in Hurricane, W.Va., to head south for a Memorial Day beach vacation ? and ended up in the center of Tropical Storm Beryl.

While it left little damage after sweeping ashore with 70 mph winds around midnight Monday at Jacksonville, Fla., the storm still wrecked much of Connolly's trip. She skipped a graduation because powerful winds kept her and her daughters from venturing past the beach boardwalk when the storm approached Sunday. And she postponed their drive home Monday as Beryl, downgraded to a tropical depression, continued to dump rain near the Georgia-Florida state line.

"It definitely changed our vacation to unfortunate circumstances that we're not happy with. But you just have to live with it," said Connolly, who at least found the irony of her hometown's name "pretty funny."

Beach trips, backyard barbecues and graveside Memorial Day observances got a good soaking in southeastern Georgia and northern Florida.

Beach lifeguards turned swimmers away from the ocean because of dangerous rip currents from Jacksonville to Tybee Island, Georgia's largest public beach 140 miles to the north. Skip Sasser, who oversees the island's lifeguards as its fire chief, said beach traffic was unusually thin for a holiday. The ocean was declared off-limits to swimmers for a second day in a row.

"It's been raining intermittently, so it's chased a lot of them off," Sasser said. "There was a lot of traffic this morning heading westbound out of Tybee."

Veterans groups, meanwhile, soldiered on with outdoor Memorial Day ceremonies despite the grim forecast.

At Savannah's historic Bonaventure Cemetery, American Legion members worked through a downpour to make sure its plot reserved for veterans had a small American flag planted by each headstone.

"When we were setting up, I had a different shirt on and I got soaked to the skin. My socks and my underwear probably are too," said Jim Grismer, commander of American Legion Post 135 in Savannah. "I had so many people trying to talk me into moving it inside. But I said then you can't have the live firing salute and the flag raising."

The rain paused just as a crowd of about 100 people began arriving. Robert Schulz, an 80-year-old who served in the Marines in the Korean War, held a folded umbrella in one hand as he saluted with the other during the service. Schulz said he and his wife briefly considered skipping the ceremony for the first time in 10 years.

"I said it would be terrible if nobody showed up," Barbara Schulz said. "We had to come for our veterans."

Aside from ruining holiday plans, the rain was welcome on the Georgia coast for bringing some relief from persistent drought. According to the state climatologist's office, as of May 1, rainfall in Savannah was 15 inches below normal for the past 12 months.

Emergency officials said minor flooding was reported near the coast, but the ground was quickly soaking up the water. And the winds had died down considerably.

"We've needed it for a long time," said Ray Parker, emergency management director for coastal McIntosh County south of Savannah, who said the worst damage came by trees falling on two homes overnight. "We were lucky that we didn't get 3 to 4 inches in 30 minutes. Most of it soaked right in before it had a chance to run off. It fell on an empty sponge."

The rainfall stopped in Savannah and other northern parts of the Georgia coast Monday afternoon, but more was expected through Tuesday. A frontal system moving south from the Great Lakes is expected to cause the storm do a U-turn and push it back out to sea.

Despite gray skies and puddles among the cobblestones on Savannah's downtown riverfront, Ruth Laino and Pat Walton waited on a park bench to board a ferry boat for an hour-long river cruise. They said only one rain burst interrupted their trip so far but they were on a covered tour trolley.

"We have our rain ponchos in our bags, so we're prepared," said Walton. "It could have been really nice and really hot. The breeze makes it more comfortable."

Georgia Power reported about 2,900 coastal customers without power Monday morning, but that number dropped to 1,300 by afternoon. Jacksonville city officials say 20,000 were without power and bus service was canceled because of so many flooded roads, downed power lines and trees.

Streets in Jacksonville Beach were unusually vacant. Bands of blinding rain alternated with dry conditions.

Taylor Anderson, captain of Jacksonville Beaches' American Red Cross Volunteer Lifesaving Corps, said he was coordinating safety procedures with local government officials. The beach was closed, but before it was on Sunday, lifeguards over and over again had to warn people to get out of the water, he said.

"Now that the storm's finally onshore and people can see that it's so dangerous and the winds and the current are up, people are lot more hesitant to go in, more so than yesterday," Anderson said.

In northeast Florida, several Memorial Day events were canceled, including one honoring veterans at the St. Augustine National Cemetery and a parade in Palatka.

"I don't mean to sound mushy, but today is Memorial Day and I hate that it ruined some plans," said Glynn County, Ga., emergency management director Jay Wiggins. "But that's just the nature of the weather."

Beryl was expected to bring 4 to 8 inches of rain to parts, with some areas getting as much as a foot. Forecasters said the storm surge and high tide could bring 2 to 4 feet of flooding in northeastern Florida and Georgia, and 1 to 2 feet in southern South Carolina.

As they left the Savannah cemetery, 76-year-old Army veteran Byron Stephens and his wife, Marilyn, said they were determined to attend the Memorial Day ceremony regardless of the weather.

"It didn't stop people from fighting in inclement weather," Marilyn Stephens said. "This is what Memorial Day is all about."

Cain Velasquez improved to 10-1 in his career with a dominating win over Antonio Silva.

UFC president Dana White confirmed at the evening's post-event press conference that heavyweight champ Dos Santos will likely next face the man that he beat for the belt, Velasquez.

"I think it's a good idea," White told MMAjunkie.com. "I like it."

A date and location for the event have yet to be determined.

UFC 146 took place Saturday night at Las Vegas' MGM Grand Garden Arena. Dos Santos downed Frank Mir in the main event, defending an early takedown and then outboxing Mir before scoring a second-round TKO en route to the first successful defense of his title.

The victory served as Dos Santos' 10th straight win overall, and he remains undefeated in the UFC octagon.

Meanwhile, Velasquez earned his first win since surrendering the belt to Dos Santos at this past November's UFC on FOX 1 event.

Facing Strikeforce import Antonio Silva, Velasquez was in vintage form, taking the fight to the floor in the early going and pounding away from top position. A short Velasquez elbow opened a gash on Silva's head that bled profusely and left "Bigfoot" struggling to see. Velasquez was unrelenting with his ground-and-pound and earned a stoppage with his brutal assault at the 3:36 mark of the round.

With the win, Velasquez rebounded from the first professional loss of his career.

Easy Guidelines to Buying Domain Names

Buy domain names may seem like a daunting task when starting an Internet marketing niche. Most people are not aware of how to come up with a good domain name. However, buying and registering a domain name is the first step in developing any website. The domain name is your personal Web address by which you will be identified on the Internet. As such, buying and choosing the best available domain name is an essential undertaking, the outcome of which is critical for your website?s eventual success.

Before you buy domain name, you need to think of ways on how you are going to make your domain stand out amid the scores of online competitors. This is known as your Unique Selling Position or USP. This is evident among big companies who have managed to stand out despite the emergence of hordes of competitors. It?s a given that they have deep pockets to help them along, but they are in constant search of ways to buy domain names that would give them their much needed USP. The Internet is an equal playing field, even if you?re just starting an online business, you can buy domain name which will provide you with your own USP.

When you finally decide to buy domain name, you first need to register it. For this task, you don?t have to be a skilled programmer or a Web master. The process is pretty simple, all you have to do is carefully follow the steps and guidelines in registering and once you are through, you have your new domain name along with all the details about it e-mailed to you.

You probably have seen different top level domain extensions such as .net, .tv, .uk, .eu, among others. If you are engaged in business, it is generally recommended that you buy domain name with the .com extension. Top level names that end with the .com extension also tend to be more popular. Most people will usually type in .com by habit when they are trying to recall your site name. However, there is one exception, you can buy domain names with the .net and .org extensions in order to prevent anyone with your name from taking advantage of the reputation you have built over time.

Another way to buy domain name that is already taken is to try to acquire it once it?s being released. There are cases when owners forget to renew their domain on time or they simply lose interest in it, and, after the allotted grace period, the domain is available again. Buying expired domain names allows you to take advantage of the age of the domain, and acquire it at a regular price.

Open letter to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel

Dear Mr. Mayor,

As a life-long Cub fan, I have been following the political events surrounding the Cubs rather closely.? It seems that Tom Ricketts, who is the primary team owner, has a very wealthy father who lives in Nebraska.? His father was thinking about donating to a Political Action Committee and publishing some political ads which are critical of our current president, your former boss.

As things unfolded, it became apparent you are livid they would consider doing such a thing.? Many writers have pointed to the idea as stupid, how could they do something like that when the team is in negotiations with the city and looking for taxpayer funding to help improve Wrigley Field.? In effect, the tune being played is something like, ?How can they be so stupid as to anger the mayor, my God what are they thinking??

Ah yes, Chicago politics at its finest.? A little history is in order.

It was not too many years ago the owner of the White Sox wanted a new stadium.? He wanted the taxpayers to build it for him, tax him as little as possible, so he could make a nice profit.? Chicago politicians saw nothing wrong with that.? Richie Daley was the Mayor and is a Sox fan.? Of course he would do everything he could to spend taxpayer dollars, many millions of them, to build a new stadium.

The first step was to hire an engineering firm to provide political cover.? The idea was to condemn Comiskey Park, say it is unsafe, so there was a real need for a new stadium.? Oops!? If memory serves me correctly, they said it was built like a fortress and good for at least another 50 years.? What do they know?? Somehow a second firm got hired and came to the predetermined conclusion the building was almost unsafe and something had to be done.

At that point, the Sox owner said that if a new stadium was not built he may have to move the team to St. Petersburg, FL.??? They had already built him a new stadium and were ready for him to come on down.

Well it got to the 11th hour; a deal for funding had to be struck by midnight or there would be no money for the Sox new stadium.? As the minutes ticked by in the state house, phone calls went back and forth between state officials and the Mayor until a simple solution was found.? They unplugged the clock in the chamber.? That gave Chicago politicians more time to twist arms, make political deals spending even more taxpayer dollars in swaps for other political pet projects.? The funding was approved and the clock plugged back in.? The deal was cut before the midnight deadline on the only clock in the state that mattered, the one in the chamber.

Ah yes, Chicago politics at its finest.? The fact that the legislature was spending taxpayer dollars against the will of the majority of the Illinois citizens was irrelevant, after all Ritchie is a Sox fan and wanted a new stadium.

It was not too long after that, the Cubs wanted to improve their stadium.? Instead of asking the taxpayer to pay for it, the Tribune Company who owned the team at the time, was willing to pay for the improvements themselves.? Of course that presented a problem, it would make it more difficult for the owners of the surrounding buildings to sell the seats on their rooftops and steal the product for their own profits.? So the Chicago way prevailed once again.? The City declared Wrigley Field a landmark and took over architectural control so those improvements were thwarted.? That was OK though, Ritchie is a Sox fan anyway and the rooftop owners make lots of donations to the proper political party.

Now let?s fast forward a few years.? Ritchie is gone, but Obama is a Sox fan and so is Rahm; funny how that works.? The Cubs have new ownership and want to work with the city to make many necessary improvements to Wrigley.? The idea being both the taxpayer and the new owners will contribute money to do so.

Oh my!? Then it is learned that daddy is thinking about supporting a political ad being critical of the mayor?s former boss.? How can they be so stupid?

The first crime is that I should have to?be writing this.? No sportswriter in Chicago would dare say what I am saying.? They know the good mayor would unleash about 900 various inspectors on every facility they have in the state, they would find hundreds of code violations, massive fines would follow and they would be severely punished for speaking out against the mayor and/or his former boss.? Ah yes, Chicago politics at its finest.

Let?s state some obvious facts:

The Chicago Cubs are the #1 tourist attraction in the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois.? They are a big time economic asset to the community and generate a substantial amount of tax revenue for both the city and state.

The former Mayor and current Mayor are Sox fans.

If the Cubs pulled up stakes and left town (see Angels, Anaheim) the city would be losing a ton of tax money, real estate values in the neighborhood would plummet, and likely some local politicians would be held accountable.

Mr. Mayor, I would like to propose an idea.? Let?s start by taking every registered voter in the City of Chicago.? First thing is eliminate those who are actually dead, so now the list is probably culled down by around 40%.

OK, then we will have a public referendum on whether the mayor should be impeached because of abuse of power.? Cub fans would vote yes and Sox fans would vote no.? How about that Mr. Mayor, want to give that a try?? We could even require the voters to present a photo ID to prove who they are.? We wouldn?t want those pesky Cub fans voting several times under different names, now would we?

Everything I have read so far is stating that Tom Ricketts should be apologizing to the mayor.? How could his father, who lives in Nebraska, have the audacity to exercise his right to free speech and even think about being critical of your former boss?

The worst adjective I could think of to describe Tom Ricketts is a bit na?ve.? On the other hand, for the mayor to publicly acknowledge his anger, and make it known it may factor into the negotiations with the city is an absolute abuse of power.? Mr. Mayor, Tom Ricketts owes you no apology.? You owe him and all citizens of Chicago an apology.

For those of you keeping score at home, let me summarize.? The implication of every article I read was the Ricketts family was guilty of a misdeed.? Being this is Chicago politics, the motive of the mayor and politicians would be to punish them so they never ever do something like this again.? The idea being their misdeed would certainly hamper the negotiations, wink, wink!? What was their misdeed you ask?? There are no nasty political ads being blared about the nation.? Nothing has transpired at all according to the articles I have read.? It was the idea of even ?thinking? about doing so which caused the ire of the mayor.

What has the mayor done wrong?? So far he has done nothing wrong either??that is unless you would consider ?thinking? about punishing the Ricketts family and looking for clever ways to do so an abuse of political power.? I am criticizing the mayor for the same?thing Mr. ?Ricketts is being criticized for?..?thinking? badly.

You may have forgotten, Mr. Ricketts could move his team just like Mr. Reinsdorf threatened to do.? It would serve you right to have your legacy be that you are the Mayor that drove the Cubs, the city?s #1 cash cow, out of town and into the suburbs.

Mr. Mayor, might I suggest an alternative brand of Chicago politics.? How about actually working in tandem with the Ricketts family?? How about showing them it is really possible for the government and private business to work together for the benefit of all.? Perhaps then, like many business people, they would not feel a need to even think of being critical of government.

Didn?t Sears move their national headquarters out to the suburbs a few years ago?? I wonder how that is working out for Chicago.
