In her new book Money Grows on the Tree of Knowledge Tracy R. Twyman explains how money ? all money ? has origins in religion, mythology & alchemy. These masters of illusion have tricked us all into sacrificing our own youth, and that of our own children, by convincing us that ?time is money.??

Twyman begins by writing ?The symbol for the dollar is familiar throughout the world? There are several different theories about the origin of this symbol, although I don?t believe that they are mutually exclusive.? Most people have probably heard that the dollar symbol came from the Spanish Milled Dollar which showed banners wrapped around two pillars ? the Pillars of Hercules. The image on the Spanish coin has a much older history Twyman writes, ?shekel coins made on the ancient Phoenician island of Tyre, which feature both the Pillars of Hercules, and a serpent coiled around a tree, ala the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden.?The symbol of the snake on the tree also hints at the caduceus (magical wand) of Hermes (known to the Romans as Mercury) and even the crucified serpent from the Biblical book of Genesis. A variant of this symbol was used in astrology (as a symbol of the planet mercury) and in alchemy to denote the substance of mercury also called quicksilver. This is only the beginning of the connection between money and religion, mythology & alchemy.

The first coins were created, not as a means of trade or exchange in the marketplace, but as a way to make an offering at the temple of your preferred deity. Historians consider the origin of coin money to be from around 3000 B.C, in the Temples of Ishtar (the Mesopotamian fertility goddess) for use in a religious rite known as ?sacred prostitution.? It was thought that if the men simulated intercourse with the goddess (with priestesses serving as a substitute), this would stimulate fertility in the land. In order to get a coin and thus the services of a prostitute, male worshipers made offerings in the form of wheat receiving one ?shekel? for each bushel of wheat ? ?shekel? translates to ?bushel of wheat.? Interestingly ?bread? (or words that translate as ?bread?) is still a slang term for money throughout the world. Several other words such as ?money?, ?monetary?, and ?mint?derive from the Roman use of coins in the temples of Juno Moneta.

During the middle-ages the modern concept of banking was born ? again with origins related to religion. The Knights Templar officially the official guardians of pilgrims en route to/from the Holy Land established a system of ?banks? allowing pilgrims to deposit some money in the form of gold or silver at the Templar preceptory nearest to their point of departure and withdraw it along their trip ? for a fee, of course. The Templars also created fractional-reserve banking and the use of ?cheques.? At this point, the history of money gets very complex ? the Templars were accused of humiliating and blasphemous initiation rituals, they were also accused of homosexual orgies, baby sacrifices, and of treasonous dealings with the Muslim enemy. Twyman goes on to explain how these rituals are connected not only to modern occult practices but also to ancient religious rituals, mythology and also works in alchemy. All of which comes full circle to our modern money.

In the past, some alchemist were said to have bathed in the ?fountain of youth? ? which is believed by some to be the blood of child sacrifices. In a similar metaphoric sense, the elite bankers have been bathing in the fountain of youth since the early 1900?s when the Federal Reserve was created & a national income tax instituted. Not long after the creation of the Fed, the currency was no longer backed by any thing of value, instead being backed by the ?full faith and credit? of the United States government. Twyman writes, ?In order to enjoy the imagined benefits of the central bank?s alchemical magic, each American would need to become a wage slave? to the the banking system.

Rising Brit stars Jack O'Connell and Olly Alexander will star in uwantme2killhim, a thriller based on Judy Bachrach's Vanity Fair article about a friendship of opposites and Internet evil, directed by Andrew Douglas.

Douglas's film, written by Mike Walden, will also have turns from Anna Maxwell Martin, Jaime Winstone and Ruth Wilson.

It details the story of a 16 year old boy named Mark who meets Rachel on the Internet and begins an intense online relationship. When Rachel is murdered the boy and Rachel's brother make plans to avenge her death.

Due to roll July 4 in the U.K., the movie is produced by Bryan Singer (Valkyrie), Steve Golin of Anonymous Content (The Beaver), Peter Heslop (The King's Speech) and Simon Crocker of Andrew Douglas Films. Jason Taylor, Marc Berliner and Lenny Bekerman will serve as exec producers.

Douglas said: "For teenagers today, the internet is their portal, their escape; it is their drug. It is the dark woods of fairy tales. This is a story about relationships as much as it is about technology. While the Internet is a key factor in this story, it will become transparent, and the film will be a gritty, sexy, violent thriller seen through the eyes of those boys, Mark and John."

Momentum Pictures and Alliance Films have acquired rights for the U.K. and Canada respectively while international sales are being handled by Independent at the Marche du Film.

Ireland has a strong tradition of folk music and poetry that's familiar to many Americans. But in the hands of Dublin-born composer Donnacha Dennehy, it's transformed into something completely different.

The first piece on Dennehy's new CD ? out Tuesday ? is called Gr? agus B?s, which means "love and death" in Gaelic. The singer's plaintive cries sound very much like phrases from Irish folk music, while the accompaniment features a kind of pulsating minimalist shimmer, played by a classical music group called Crash Ensemble, co-founded by Dennehy.

"I need a kind of vehicle for my music and I need an ensemble that can do it, people I can trust," Dennehy says of his musicians. "I don't want to be this kind of old-fashioned composer waiting around for commissions for instrumentations that don't really trigger something in me. I was very lucky, though, because the [Crash] group is great. There's a great collaborative spirit among them. It feels like a band. I can ring them up and they'll come 'round to my house, even. We can record things to see ? in the middle of a composition ? how it works. It's like a lab, you know? It's like Haydn having his orchestra at Esterhazy. It's really helpful."

Classical Meets The Sounds Of Pop

Dennehy adds that Crash's mix of traditional classical instruments and such pop-geared sounds as electric guitar and drum kit are essential to his artistic ideas.

"The instrumentation's really important in it, actually, because you have that kind of full-ensemble thing, so you can get almost a quasi-orchestral sound out of them," he says. "And then it's got this edge from having the electric guitar and a percussion player who can play kick drum and snare, just as easily as he can play any of the tuned percussion."

It's the crashing of old and new that Dennehy wants to explore. Although he grew up in urban Dublin, both his parents came from County Kerry, and every summer he'd go there and hear sean n?s music ? Irish folk music in the old style.

"There'd be long all-night sessions in my grandmother's house with singing and poetry, and people remembering 30-stanza poems," the composer says. "These would go right through the night. As children, we would stay up, even through these sessions." As a result, he says, many locals can sing in the old style ? and he was interested in it from his youth, as well.

Dennehy wanted to incorporate some of that old style in his new work, so he got in touch with an expert: Iarla ? Lion?rd, who, as the composer explains, "is probably one of the best exponents of that style today."

The two met several times, and Dennehy had ? Lion?rd sing his entire repertoire. Then the composer chose two songs, which he sliced, diced and otherwise deconstructed for Gr? agus B?s.

"They were pregnant with possibility," Dennehy says. "So I made use of little phrases, little patterns from the songs, that then went into the patterns in the instruments. Little ornamentation became little minimalist patterns in the instrumentation. And the words are entirely taken from these two songs. So it's like they're embedded in the DNA, but they're kind of exploded."

Ireland's Pros And Cons

That Irish DNA allows for some other artistic freedoms, Dennehy says.

"Living in Ireland is kind of a drawback, in many ways," he says, "because Ireland is on the periphery of Europe; we don't have any of the tradition of supporting musical culture in the way that they do in someplace like Holland, let's say, or Germany. And the financial collapse is a bit of a drawback at the moment."

However, being Irish also affords great liberty, Dennehy says.

"It's a huge freedom, because we're making it up as we go along," the composer says. "And we have our own traditional music culture, which is extremely strong, and then, in terms of other global trends, we are just as open to America as we are to what's happening in Europe. The further you go into Europe, they're more closed off to that. So there's a real kind of open-mindedness in Ireland."

A Collaboration Is Born

When Bob Hurwitz, president of Nonesuch Records, played Gr? agus B?s for American soprano Dawn Upshaw, she immediately asked Hurwitz to introduce her to Dennehy. A new collaboration was born.

"It was one of the first times that I kind of got together with a composer without knowing exactly what might come out of the conversation or what kind of project it would be," Upshaw says, "and everything has felt very easy and natural and warm."

Dennehy created a song cycle for Upshaw: Called That the Night Come, it's composed of six settings of poetry by the Irish national treasure William Butler Yeats. The composer says he read every word Yeats wrote before he chose the six poems ? all about love and death ? that make up the cycle.

"These poems are so rich, with lots of hidden meanings," he says, "and you could take a meaning in a different way. That's classically Irish, you know? When we say something, it has five possible meanings, and our conversations are constructed on those grounds."

The composer says that Yeats' work has had particular resonance for him.

"I would consider myself a very kind of optimistic person," Dennehy says, "but, you know, life is life and it's a peculiar situation, you know? We all have it; there's the struggle for meaning, there's the struggle for kind of a love that has a sustainability and then, there is that harsh reality of death. And no matter how sunny and optimistic we all are, these are facts that are there in the background. I suppose Yeats really... he beautifully put some of these issues into words."

A Voice In Mind

Dennehy says he crafted the Yeats songs with Upshaw's voice in mind ? utilizing not just her upper register, but her lower register, as well.

"There's this kind of deep intensity that Dawn has now that people don't automatically associate with her," Dennehy says. "They associate just the pure, floating tone. But there's a lot of complexity in Dawn, and I really wanted to use all that."

One of the reasons that Wizard magazine finally had to cease publication is that its monopoly on superhero news and discussion had long since evaporated. Today, you can find numerous sites that include interviews, reviews, and commentary about superhero comics, past and present.

They roughly fall into three different categories: news, creator, and fan sites.

DC and Marvel, the big two, of course have their own official websites. Marvel?s site has the comics listed as a subset of an overall site that also includes movie and television productions. It also lists the newest digital releases. DCComics.com is far more comics-centered but the best feature of the website is the The Source, a blog that is updated regularly with previews, news of the latest creative teams, and interviews with creators. Unfortunately, neither site offers much in the way of forums. DC had to shut down the comments on The Source because they became abusive and hateful. Thus far, comments haven?t been re-opened and DC?s message boards are not exactly a friendly place to new posters. Marvel does better. First, they have clearly defined rules posted at the top of their forums with the stated intent to make them all-ages.

Moving on from the official sites, there are news sites that I would define as those that pay their writers, however little. These include Comicbookresources.com, Ain?t It Cool News, and Newsarama. Of these three, I like Comic Book Resources the best because of their regular blogs, especially Comics Should Be Good, and their active and heavily moderated forums.? The other two will certainly provide the latest news but I find Ain?t It Cool harder to navigate and while Newsarama often has breaking news, chances for interaction between fans are limited. CBR tends to offer the mix I favor. I asked friends for recommendations as well and got several for ComicsAlliance. It certainly has a user-friendly home page and a really nice mix of subject matter, including a section on webcomics, a truly nice touch. There?s also the long-running The Comics Journal.

There are a large number of creator and fan sites, too many to list them all, so if you don?t see your favorite among my articles, feel free to recommend your own favorites in the comments below. Creator and fan sites tend to be the most fun to read because they?re the most eclectic, personal, and have a very specific point of view such as Sequential Tart, which is a webzine offering a women?s point of view on sequential art.

Often, like Peter David?s blog or Gail Simone?s forum on Jinxworld, they are about far more than comics. Jinxworld, the home of prolific comic writer Brian M. Bendis, also hosts Bendis? own active forums and forums for eighteen other creators.

If you Google your favorite superhero writers, chances are you will be able to find their websites along with a message board where you can interact with them. Geoff Johns, Greg Rucka, and Ed Brubaker all have interactive sites, though it looks like Brubaker is best found on Twitter, like so many other comic creators. (You never really know who?s out there on Twitter. I publicly thanked Judy Blume for her books helping my daughter to love reading recently and, poof, the tweet was soon found by Judy Blume.)

One of my favorite new sites is Tastes Like Comics, which was started by posters who?ve known each other from various comic message boards over the year. Full disclosure compels me to reveal that a number of the writers for this site are friends of mine and that I may be prejudiced in their favor but I love the off-beat voice of the site and they don?t cover just comics ? witness the steampunk fashion articles.

Recommendations also led me to Bully Says: Comics Oughta Be Fun! and I got lost for a while in there.

Tumblr is also the home of a large number of comics-related blogs all with a distinct personal voice. Since I?m a DC Comics fangirl at heart, my favorite of those has to be DC Women Kicking Ass, which is just celebrating its first anniversary. Content is added everyday, and there are fun events like the recent contests about the most memorable moments for DC heroines. This Tumblr provides a much-needed voice that is not often heard on traditional comic sites.

And, sometimes, your own comic shop will often have newsletters and features. Once a week, I get a newsletter from Modern Myths in Northhampton, Massachusetts, with news of the latest releases and in-store events.

With all these sites and the thousands of others that I didn?t list, it?s easy to see why Wizard wasn?t needed and lost relevance. So what are your favorite sites?

Kiva.org, one of the pioneers in micro-lending to international entrepreneurs, has expanded into a new vertical today? Kiva Green Loans.

Green Loans, which can be accessed from a new module on the lend tab, is a new vertical that allows the Kiva community to make loans towards green businesses and individuals who are helping make the transition to cleaner and more efficient sources of energy. Kiva Green Loans include both business and personal loans that contribute towards reducing energy expenditures, minimizing waste and pollution, recycling, or re-purposing used materials.

For example, Blanca Rosa of Santa Cruz, Bolivia has applied for a $500 loan from Kiva to help her expand her business of converting taxi engines to run on natural gas, which ends up being a more affordable business model. With the loan she received from Kiva, she was able to purchase an emulator, timing devices, iron, bolts, and other supplies for her gas conversion workshop.

Other examples of Green Loans include loans to create or purchase organic fertilizer; loans to purchase renewable energy-generating devices, such as solar panels, wind power and biofuels; loans for transportation, including hybrid cars, converting cars to natural gas or purchasing a bicycle; loans for ?green? home improvements, including more efficient heating methods or high-efficiency cookers/low propane gas stoves; and recycling-related loans, such as re- purposing or transforming used or recycled materials.

This is actually the second vertical that Kiva has expanded to. The non-profit just added student loans to the mix last Fall.

Kiva has been growing like a weed since its launch in 2008. Currently, over 570,000 people have loaned more than $200 million to entrepreneurs in 59 countries via Kiva. Kiva?s repayment rate thus far (for entrepreneurs) is 98 percent and the startup is raising $1 million every 5 days for small businesses. And Kiva CEO Premal Shah predicts that the organization will raise $1 billion in microloans by 2015. Expanding the power of this service to green businesses is no doubt a worthy cause.

Process servers are an integral part of the legal process. Court documents for cases and procedures dealing with real estate, small claims, divorce filings, personal protection, and more will often require one involved party to "serve" a second involved party with an official document or notification (e.g. subpoena, complaints, summons). These documents need to be delivered to the involved parties in a timely manner and are often required to be delivered by a disinterested 3rd party.

There are different types of firms that specialize in process serving. The most common are specialized process serving companies and attorney services (which often contract with a process server company).

Attorney services can be convenient and typically focus on marketing to and dealing with attorneys, directly. They can be convenient if the attorney also has a need for other services such as court filings. However, for many private individuals or small attorney firms, going direct to a process server company has a number of advantages:

More personalized service: Attorney services often deal in volume, using the lowest cost resource that they can for a particular job. Often they'll sub-contract as well, so the job has a higher risk of being lost in the shuffle (a particularly bad outcome for a time-sensitive court document). Process Server firms are set up to conduct the work themselves and have a direct relationship with the professional server fulfilling the work.

Less Bureaucracy: Once again, a firm specializing in serving documents is usually leaner and more focused. They are more likely to take less of their clients' time to get the information needed to get the job done.

When evaluating firms to serve your documents, it will be important to determine the following:

Cost: How are costs arrived at? Are you paying for "attempts" or do you pay a fixed amount for a set result? Also, do you pay mileage costs? Are there pre-determined limits to mileage or attempts.

Timeframe: When will the first attempt be made? How often will subsequent attempts be made? If the party can't be found, how soon will you be informed?

Communication: Will the firm keep you in the loop as to the progress of the job or will you need to follow up? What is more stressful than feeling that time-sensitive documents are in limbo? If issues arise, such as a bad address, or if the defendant has moved, died or is incarcerated, you need to be notified as soon as possible.

Registered and Bonded: If the firm is serious, all the process servers should be registered and bonded

Finally, get a feel for the firm's professionalism. How a firm's website looks, how they answer the phone, how they answer your questions will all give you a feel for their professionalism. Chances are good (though not certain), that if a company pays attention to how they look and come across to prospective clients, they pay attention to the job as well. Few companies tend to be conscientious only in select areas. This is not a fact but a good rule of thumb.

Villagers along the southern coast of Bangladesh not only have to cope with some of the world's heaviest rainfall; they also live in cyclone-battered communities, on mushy ground just a few feet above a rising sea.

Photographer Jonas Bendiksen made three separate trips to Bangladesh last year to document the wet season and the ways that rising waters are altering Bangladeshi life. National Geographic's May issue shows the impact of flooding in a densely-populated, low-lying country barraged by seasonal monsoons and cyclones, and situated in the Ganges Delta ? the world's largest delta.

The photos portray an adaptability and resilience of the Bangladeshi people ? who don't seem to ask if there will be floods during the wet season, but when and how often. The photos also visualize what other coastal populations could face with rising sea-levels.

On the phone, Bendiksen explains that floods in Bangladesh aren't always viewed as natural disasters. Some people will move 20 to 30 times in their lifetime due to flooding, so their homes and lives are mobile. Some convert flooded rice paddies into shrimp farms or floating gardens. Children are taught in mobile floating schools aboard boats; they invent new ways to survive.

Bendiksen asserts that "their solutions are not global fixes," but he says, "their approach gives me hope and inspiration."

LICHTMAN: The next one is candy corn is space.

LICHTMAN: Apparently, you can use a bald, wet candy corn to demonstrate some science if you are as innovative as Don Pettit, an astronaut who we've talked to on the show.

And our newest edition to our space lineup is one that features one of our last guests, Jeff Hoffman, the astronaut who was just on. And that this is an astronaut in space. And he went on a spacewalk in his first mission up and really had some moving words, I thought, about what that experience was like. So you can actually see him fixing a satellite.

FLATOW: He's very - as you can hear, he's very articulate, but also he liked to play games in space too, didn't he?

LICHTMAN: That's true. And since he - you brought up a Slinky and a little toy car. And I think that his favorite, he said, was the yo-yo. So can you guess what a yo-yo does in zero G? I couldn't, but you can see the answer.

FLATOW: Wow.

LICHTMAN: You said some physicists were sort of - had vigorous debate about this until he actually did the experiment.

FLATOW: How would a yo-yo work in space?

LICHTMAN: Yeah. So you can find out. I mean, I was just like, what - you started the hour talking about the right stuff, and it seems from these videos anyway that the sort of intense curiosity must be part of being an astronaut because...

Getting along with your fellow astronauts can be dangerous. Too much consensus ? what some psychologists call ?groupthink? ? can keep crews from being creative in a crisis. But a new study found that six ?cosmonauts? on a simulated Mars mission emerged from 105 days in a replica spacecraft with their quirks intact.

The study was the first to directly tackle the possible downside of harmony, rather than antagonism, in a space mission.

?Earlier, we had been focusing on how tension increases over time,? said social psychologist Gro Sandal of the University of Bergen in Norway, lead author of a paper to be published in Acta Astronautica. ?This paper has more or less the opposite focus: whether people start to think more and more similar while they are isolated.?

Groupthink is still a controversial concept: Not all social psychologists think it exists. But those who believe in it think it tends to happen when people isolated in an extreme situation ? a war zone, for instance, or a ship in the Arctic ? start thinking in lockstep and avoiding outward disagreement. Groupthinkers also often feel like they?re united against a common enemy ? on a space mission, this could be Mission Control.

?The worst case scenario is ? there may be a microculture within the crew that evolves, and the crew starts having values that deviate to a large extent from values on Earth,? Sandal said.

Sandal and colleagues monitored six pretend cosmonauts in a pilot study for the Mars500 project, an ongoing simulated space mission being held at the Institute of Biomedical Problems in Moscow. From March 31 to July 14, 2009, two Russian cosmonauts, a Russian medical doctor and sports physiologist, a mechanical engineer in the German army, and a French airline pilot lived and worked as if they were on a real space station.

The crew spent their days in a hamster-cage-like simulation chamber designed to reflect the dimensions and layout of the International Space Station. The chamber also mimicked the humidity, temperature, pressure and gas composition of the ISS, bringing the crew as close to space as they could get while still feeling Earth?s gravity.

Each crew member had his own tiny sleeping quarters, plus a shared living room, kitchen and workplaces with medical equipment. The cosmonauts were kept to a strict schedule of eating, exercising and performing or participating in scientific experiments.

?We tried to keep the work procedures and the schedule of the days quite similar to the schedule and work accomplished during real flights,? Sandal said.

To see how similar the cosmonauts? thought processes were, the researchers gave them a questionnaire before, after and at specific intervals during the 105 days of confinement. The questionnaire asked each cosmonaut to rank his personal values according to a scale developed by psychologist Shalom Schwartz in the 1990s.

?It?s a good scale, and quite widely used,? said psychologist Peter Suedfeld of the University of British Columbia, who is well known for studying the psychology of isolated groups, but was not involved in the new study. ?We use it, too.?

The scale splits human values up into 10 categories, including ?hedonism? (people who value pleasure and enjoying themselves), ?benevolence? (people who value preserving harmony in the in-group) and ?tradition? (maintaining the status quo). Sandal and colleagues measured how similar the cosmonauts were to each other in each of these values, and how much that similarity changed over time.

?We did not find any indications of groupthink. We saw that interpersonal differences became more salient.? One source of tension was the food.

They found that, rather than values converging and harmony reigning as the crew got used to each other, the cosmonauts grew more tense, especially in the last 35 days of the mission when they were allowed more autonomy.

?We did not find any indications of groupthink,? Sandal said. ?We saw that interpersonal differences within the crew became more salient as a source of tension.?

One source of tension was the food. Two of the astronauts were unhappy with the meal choices and lost 20 pounds in the first 45 days of the mission. They thought the food included too many nutrition bars and cookies, Sandal said.

?I was hungry all the time. And angry,? wrote one of these crew members. After Mission Control changed the meal plans for those two astronauts, ?other crew members looked at us with hungry eyes.?

Another point of contention was how closely to follow instructions from Earth.

?It was in some situations when Earth gave us some instructions, and Russians made their own way to how it was correct,? one (presumably Russian) crew member wrote. ?But Europeans followed the instructions of Earth like blind.?

It?s not clear what to conclude from this experiment, Sandal admits. Maybe if we choose groups of astronauts who begin with different values, we?ll end up with tenser but safer crews.

Suedfeld notes that the paper only tracks how the group?s average values changed as a whole, not how individual astronauts? values changed over time. He also pointed out that six astronauts isn?t a sufficient sample for serious statistical analysis, and that it?s hard to convince people they?re actually in space when they know they?re still on the ground.

?Whether a larger sample size or a longer duration together or being actually up in space ?? rather than an experiment on the ground ? would come up with different results ? who knows?? he said. ?I would consider it more a pilot study than one to draw strong conclusions from. But it can point the way for future studies.?

How Much Can You Afford?

This question alone is enough to strike fear into anyone?s heart. The truth is not many people enjoy establishing a remodeling budget-and many just don?t. Many homeowners prefer to call a remodeling contractor and expect him or her to create the budget for them, which is not the best way to begin. How do you start off right? You can begin by taking these four easy steps in the right direction:

?

Step One: Decide how long you plan on staying in your home.?The length of time you intend to stay in a home will affect how much money you should invest in it. If you are going to stay in the home for more than ten years, you should spend as much as you are able to create the home of your dreams. However, if you are planning on moving in the near future, you should take care not to over-build for your neighborhood. Look into the real estate comparisons for your area and keep your investment in line with the average home sales price. You don?t want to invest thousands of dollars you won?t be able to recoup at closing.

Step Two: Make a list of all your debts.?You should include any debts you pay on a monthly basis, such as mortgages, car loans, credit cards, and any other items with a fixed monthly payment. This list should not include payments for groceries, utilities, telephone services, or other general expenses. Call this list your monthly expenses.

Step Three: Determine your total gross monthly income.?Include all sources of income that you would list on a loan application.

Step Four: Complete the following worksheet?to determine how much you can afford to pay for your remodeling project on a monthly basis. These formulas are used when the remodeling project is going to be financed. Warning: Cash is not always the best option!

For example, if the lender accepts DTI ratios of 45 percent and your DTI ratio is 30 percent, your loan would be approved. However, if your DTI ratio is 55 percent, you would need to find other financing options. Perhaps your lender offers debt consolidation loans that could reduce your DTI ratio, which brings us to the next step:

Step 2 ? The Maximum Payment

The next step is to determine the maximum monthly payment you can afford for remodeling. Multiply your monthly gross income amount by the lender?s maximum DTI allowance, and subtract your current total monthly expenses, excluding the estimated remodeling payment.

This would incorporate your current debts into the home improvement loan. Not only does this allow you to roll your debts into what may be a tax deductible loan, it also provides one easy payment for your debts and lowers your DTI percentage. In addition, the interest rate on a debt consolidation loan may be lower, which will save you additional money.

Top five will tackle two themes on tonight's performance show, the 1960s and the enigmatic 'now.'

This week, "American Idol" thrusts us into a temporal and philosophical conundrum as we try to suss out what exactly producers mean by "now." For that of-the-moment adverb is one-half of Wednesday's (May 4) musical theme, which will have the final five contestants singing two songs each. The other half is straightforward, if unimaginative, enough: the 1960s. But "now"?

Are we talking about tunes currently on the radio or the Billboard Hot 100? Songs penned this year or this decade or this millennium? Or, like the nature of the space-time continuum itself, is there something ultimately unknowable and thus, up to individual interpretation, about just what "now" truly means?

Ugh, our heads are starting to hurt! Let us turn our attention instead to Casey Abrams, who exited the "Idol" stage in a tornado of growls and grunts and promises to "do everything I can to get myself out there and bring jazz back." We've been hard on Casey in recent weeks. Perhaps more so than we should have been, if only because we so often beg contestants to give us something fresh and unexpected, and then dismiss them when they do. Take one look at a YouTube video he uploaded last year — in which he not only sings but plays guitar, bass, drums, piano and clarinet — and you'll know the kid is a true musical talent, as well as a loveable goofball. Dude, we wish you well, now and forever (whatever that means in the "Idol" universe these days).

So, too, are we wishing for the top five to build on last week's generally impressive performances and pop off another standout show. Here's where the singers stand at this point and what each one will have to deliver on Wednesday.

"Idol" producers made a puzzling decision last week, declining to identify a bottom three or even a bottom two and instead announcing the elimination in random order. Any thoughts on that one, reality-show conspiracy theorists? The problem — and, perhaps, the intention — was that the elimination process didn't leave us with a clear sense of who's up and who's down with the likes of Casey, Stefano Langone and Paul McDonald out of the contest. Lauren has thus far avoided bottom-three territory, but there's no doubt she's been struggling to find her form over the last month. She seems confused up on stage and dejected off of it. There's no reason to doubt her dedicated fanbase yet, but Lauren is in dire need of a breakout performance. We think she needs to bust out a hit contemporary tune — Taylor Swift, anyone? — and a slow '60s number that allows her a bit of sultry swagger reminiscent of her early season-10 performances.

James Durbin
While Lauren needs to bounce back, James needs to build on his stellar take on "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" and solidify his status, according to Randy Jackson, as a singer who can take home the "Idol" crown. We're as surprised as anyone that it's come to this, but he's gotten better and smarter as the season has gone on. He's a true contender. With the opportunity to sing two songs, we expect James to go righteous and heavy metal with his "now" tune and somber and sensitive with his '60s one. We know which one we'll prefer, but voters seem to dig anything the 22-year-old has to offer.

Jacob Lusk
Of all the remaining contestants, Jacob was done the biggest favor by the random elimination. And that's coming off of a pre-performance package in which Jimmy Iovine did his best to encourage voters to send Jacob home. His cheesy take on "Oh No Not My Baby" didn't help matters much. We'd say nothing short of a miracle can save Jacob this week, but miraculous voting results are an "Idol" institution. Regardless, Jacob should confine to history's dustbin the advice he's been given recently to let loose and go wild; instead he should remember how well vocal restraint has served him and latch onto a velvety '60s soul or gospel track from somebody like Sam Cooke, Al Green or Otis Redding. A fine new tune with an uplifting message to explore would be John Legend's take on "Wake Up Everybody."

Scotty McCreery
The random elimination might have made for good TV, but it was deeply unfair to Scotty. The country kid has never fallen into the bottom three, and yet he had to suffer up onstage next to Casey as America waited in disbelief, wondering if Scotty might actually be going home. He didn't, and he won't for a long time — not with the singer finally injecting some emotional heft into his radio-hit-ready country renditions. "Now," we think, gives Scotty a chance to bite into something from Rascal Flatts or Zac Brown Band, which would be a refreshing change (though musical evolution has never been high on his list of "Idol" priorities). And a little '60s era Johnny Cash could be a good, change-it-up-a-bit fit.

Haley Reinhart
Conventional wisdom would seem to suggest that, before she even steps out onto the stage, Haley's in deep trouble this week. Her fanbase is suspect and the judges have never embraced her, for whatever unjust reason, the way they have Lauren. What Haley needs to have on Wednesday, more so than ever, is one of those much-hyped "moments" — a performance that lets voters know she's not some unlikely hanger-on but a singer deserving of fervent support. She's got the potential — the bluesy, old-soul promise — and now's the time for her to convert ability into reality. We hear her favorite tune is Etta James' "At Last," so that emotion-heavy ballad seems a likely (and savvy) choice. For her contemporary tune, she should choose something highly recognizable and give it a stripped-down, bluesy makeover. She's already tackled an Adele song. Would it be crazy to take a bite out of Katy Perry? Well, crazy might just be the fuel Haley needs to propel her forward.
